A bittersweet day...

Today, was the funeral of a friend. This friend was also the father of one of DD's closest childhood friends. He was a retired doctor who had dementia and had deteriorated significantly, so his passing was a blessing in some ways.

When I got to the church (our church also) there was an entire pew filled with DD and 5 other friends. This was her "gang" from when we moved here when she was 12. Did I mention that they all either have, or are about to turn 45? They have been in one another's weddings and many are also godparents to one another's children. Two live a long distance away, but there they all were - there to support their friend and pay respect to a man who was like a favorite uncle to them all.

It truly brought tears to my eyes to see them all together again. They keep in touch but are very busy with children and two with demanding jobs. Three have now lost a parent - DD was the first to do so nearly 12 yrs ago. What a very special relationship these " girls" have - and yes, to me they will always be "the girls".

How blessed they have always been to have the one another. Doesn't happen nearly often enough these days.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend but I agree, those moments when you see those true lifelong bonds are wonderful and touching.

Only close families and the closest of friends truly experience all those life bonds together, marriage, birth, death, etc.

Sadness can sometimes bring gratitude, as you have experienced on this day.

Glad to see the family has all the support they need to help them through this difficult time.

In church on Sunday, they had on the screen something like, "It may take a long time ... but sooner or later, you'll quote your mother". Mom was out of my life from when I was just under 6 ... psych hosp, six months after birth of last child, probably post-partum depression. Said to be schizo. Died in 1942, when I was 13. She was reportedly a fine lady ... I wish that I could remember more about her. After step-mother's death, Dad talked quite a lot about Mom to brother's son. As a number of you know ... My husband died on December 19, 2008. His funeral was the 23rd - This is my fourth Christmas without him. Any real joy in the holidays died with him - it will always been the anniversary of the saddest week of my life. Since then, I've also become estranged from one of my daughters, due to her mental illness and alcoholism. Today was quiet - son and I shared a turkey dinner I cooked. No tree, no presents, no decorations - one grandson called briefly, said he was "making the rounds" and would be over soon - never showed up. I told son if he had not been with me today, I would have been totally alone all day - might as well have just been any old day. Next year I'm seriously considering just taking a cruise over the holidays - never been on one, so maybe it's time to see what that's like. The secret is to not have very high expectations of the day.

I lost my Mother to NeuroDementia so I understand what you say about the blessing of passing on.

It is a beautiful thing to have good friends you can count on. Both my DH and I have friends that date back decades and it is a blessing to have relationships you can count on in life, death, sickness and health.

You should be proud you brought up a child who is the kind of friend who has that kind of friendship!

What a sweet moment. It is truly wonderful to see your children form lifelong bonds, and nourish those bonds, even long distance, and support each other in loss. Yes, be proud you have a child who is that kind of friend.

I understand how passing can be a blessing. Both of my parents died from Alzheimers.

That's wonderful about your daughter and her friends going to the funeral. When my daughter got married when she was 40, there were a lot of people she'd gone to high school with there. It was nice to catch up with them.

Losses happen. You don't always see such great support systems!

My DS (46) is still close with the 'children' who attended grammar school with him. None of them care about high school reunions, but get together at least once a year. DS has lost one of his two closest male friends from that time -- blood clot in the brain (leaving wife and two preteens).

Sorry for your loss.

It's wonderful that your DD has a group to share life with. It makes life that much sweeter which is needed in such times.

Glad to report my DD has such a group. DS struggles with any relationship so DD and her group take him under their wings when things get more difficult.
