Over the range Convection Microwave on Counter?
Comments (1)OTRs are not flat on the bottom, so they cannot be set on the countertop. Plus you wouldn't want to block airflow to the bottom. However, there is nothing wrong with hanging them from a shorter cabinet just like you would over the stove. I've done several kitchens that used an OTR Advantium hung from a shorter cabinet. They are 15" deep rather than the 12" deep of the cabinetry, so it looks more built in if you can utilize a 15" deep cabinet from which to hang it, but it wouldn't strictly be necessary....See MoreWhat is the best 30 inch over the range microwave?
Comments (3)I have a KA overhead Microwave/Fan. I love the look (SS) and oven operation (not a convection) but it is all but useless for ventingÂ. and I mean really useless. I believe that most, if not all, overhead comboÂs are bad at venting, so be forewarned. KC...See MoreCan I put an OTR Microwave/Convection Oven over counter instead?
Comments (13)prospect711: Thanks for your reply! I had my eye on the Sharp R-820JS, which is the stainless steel sister of your Sharp! (It sounds like an amazing appliance that pretty much does it all!) I just couldn't figure out how to get the size to work. Having a deeper cabinet is a Very interesting idea! I'm going to show this to DH to see if we can somehow swing it with our Ikea cabinetry. Thanks again! (Love your cabinets and beautiful backsplash!) Luv2Laf: Your photo is Exactly what I wanted it to look like! And right next to the fridge seems like such a perfect spot! If only it had convection too - I was really hoping for a little back up oven to cook and reheat small meals. Hmmm... Thanks so much for your reply, gorgeous photo, and the food for thought! colorfast: Okay, so it seems that the microwave/convection combos, unless they are the very wide OTR type, are pretty deep. I'll stop hunting for one that isn't. (No more wild goose chase!) We were planning on having 15" wide cabinets flanking the fridge on either side as a pantry (floor to almost ceiling height), but, maybe we should make one wider set of cabinets instead, where we can put the microwave/convection oven. I love how you have yours next to a counter. That seems to be an ideal setup to me. As for recessing it into the wall, I think we're out of luck, since the wall backs a stairwell leading to the basement as well as the stairs leading upstairs. I'm not sure that we can mess with that. I will share these ideas with DH. Thank you for your reply!...See MoreDoes anyone have the GE Profile Over the Counter Convection Microwave?
Comments (11)dbear -- is the idea to use that OTR convection-MW model over the counter (suspended from the upper cabinets) somewhere other than over your range/cooktop? That can be done. However, what I found when I looked into this some year ago was that GE's OTR models were three to four inches taller than the freestanding ones, and about three inches deeper (front to back). Basically, the freestanding version was a better match to the upper cabinets and left more usable counter space below it. Also, it was much less expensive than the OTR version. When I bought my GE Profile, it came with a kit for hanging it from the upper cabinets. GE may include that kit or may offer it as an accessory for current models. Worth checking on.. Like HB, I've also never gotten around to using the convection feature, so cannot comment on how well it does or does not work. (I just happened to find a deal on an open-box-return that made it less expensive than the non-convection models I looked at.) Sorry, that I do not have any first hand experience with the PVM9179EKES model you are looking at but maybe somebody else here can comment on how well it work as an oven and a MW?...See Morefriedajune
