If you want double ovens and are short on space, look at the double oven ranges, like the GE Cafe. Don't do an OTR.

We do not have that exact model but do have a 10 year old GE profile convection microwave (freestanding) and it has served very well. We wanted it to potentially use as second oven and have never needed it (as a convection). Microwaves great and is a good size. Knock on wood, still going strong.

That can be done. However, what I found when I looked into this some year ago was that GE's OTR models were three to four inches taller than the freestanding ones, and about three inches deeper (front to back). Basically, the freestanding version was a better match to the upper cabinets and left more usable counter space below it. Also, it was much less expensive than the OTR version. When I bought my GE Profile, it came with a kit for hanging it from the upper cabinets. GE may include that kit or may offer it as an accessory for current models. Worth checking on..

Like HB, I've also never gotten around to using the convection feature, so cannot comment on how well it does or does not work. (I just happened to find a deal on an open-box-return that made it less expensive than the non-convection models I looked at.)

Sorry, that I do not have any first hand experience with the PVM9179EKES model you are looking at but maybe somebody else here can comment on how well it work as an oven and a MW?

I too don't have much counter space nor can I give up storage for a microwave drawer. I don't have this unit (below) yet though so unfortunately I won't be able to give you an actual review.

Sharp makes an Over The COUNTER microwave. It actually mounts to the wall, not the cabinet above it. Its size is Product Dimensions (w x h x d): 15.5" x 14.1" x 23.9 so not as tall nor as deep as the OTRange micros.

Thank you so much for your response. I do not plan on using the Conv/MW over a cooktop. The cooktop will be in the new island and will have its own island hood so not looking to use the OTR MW as a fan. It just happens to have the cavity dimensions that I am looking for in order to use it as a second oven and still allow for extra counter space as it would be mounted under the cabinet. I am hoping to be able to fit a regular size cookie sheet inside (18"x13").

I love the Sharp OT Counter MW. A friend of mine has that one. Unfortunately, I need a Convection/Micro combo. :-(

Definitely not placing MW over the cooktop. My mom's kitchen was mistakenly set up that way and she says the MW handle gets really hot when she is using the cooktop.

I'm not sure that you can use an OTR microwave in a cabinet - check the specs. Also, you might appreciate the GE Flex single wall oven. It is set up like the double ovens in their ranges. This is what I'm hoping to use, but I'm currently in a debate over placement. Cabinets for single wall ovens place them kind of high for a short person to use the top oven. I'm waiting to hear from my designer about putting a microwave above the oven or the cost for a custom cabinet with 2 drawers below the oven instead of 3.

@barnoyfamily The OTR microwave would be UNDER the cabinet, not built in to the cabinet. I like your idea of the Flex single wall oven though. I knew GE made that style in a range but did not realize it also came as a built in option. Will definitely give that some serious thought. My only concern is the interior height of both ovens. They both seem rather short. I will find a local store that has this model on display and bring my roasting pan and casserole dishes to see how well everything fits. Will post again this weekend with the results.
