Can I trim my crape myrtle?
Comments (6)...and this closer pic shows better where it's starting to touch the house. Not to the point of causing damage, but touching. (Most of what you see up against the house is the lady banks roses behind it...which also needs to get cut back.) I mostly want to take off the two little branches on the bottom left area that look to be about >2" dia. A few similar branches on the other one that I want to take off, too. I'm thinking cutting a few smaller diameter branches probably won't cause any harm on these healthy trees. But I wanted to check and make sure I'm not totally off-base with my thinking. :-)...See MoreCrepe Myrtle (Crape Myrtle) with growth problems
Comments (2)I got this same thing on a sweet cherry tree and end up chopping it down, of course it is growing out of the side of the trunk, I decided I will let it live and see if I can treat it so the avoid that nasty soot. I noticed I have alot of lady bugs on my roses and they eat those suckers. My crapes last year got black spot. I guess crapes and roses are strongly related?? I am trying a garlic, water and milk mixture to fight the fungus and bugs (I am guessing they hate the taste of garlic since they never touch any of my garlic plants. When I spray the leaves of my roses it seems to deter the bugs not sure just yet just experimenting. japanesse beetles dont' seem to be a problem, one year they showed themselves but didn't last long and didn't do much damage to anything. some people just use a strong spray of the hose to get rid of the aphids they can't climb back up once they are knocked off. I have alot of acrage and birds galore I am sure they eat the bugs and that is why I seldom have a problem with them, yet. RR...See MoreHow to Make Crape Myrtle Cutting Have Multiple Trunks
Comments (10)I, too, have read the thing about planting several cuttings together, but I don't buy into that thought because that just results in multiple plants that APPEAR to be one plant. I currently have 4 adult plants, and all of them have multiple trunks. Now, these adults' multiple trunks all start ABOVE the ground. In other words, you see one trunk coming out of the ground, and all the other trunks split off that trunk, which is what I like seeing. I want the same thing on these new babies. As far as your cutting goes, that's kind of what I wonder if I need to do. I mean, shoots typically sprout when you cut somewhere above the base, which is what basically happened to yours when that branch broke off. This is why I wonder if I should top mine. But, I am scared to do that because I don't want to cut the main stem for fear of it then causing the plant to split into multiple trunks at that point, which might be too high up. I'd really prefer if the splits occur down low, just above the ground, you know what I mean?...See MoreHow to stop a Crepe/ Crape myrtle from flowering?
Comments (7)A google search on key words "Preventing a tree from flowering" got several hits. One which is about a different tree - Tuilip Poplar "...snip.... One such product is ethephon, sold as Florel Brand Fruit Eliminator®. It must be applied at just the right dosage, at just the right stage of flowering (full bloom) and at just the right temperature range......snip...There is another product called Snipper® that is designed to be injected into the tree while the flowers are still in bud stage. However, the application uses a micro-injection system that requires skilled precision. Like other hormone treatments, timing and dosage are critical. This product should only be applied by a professional." They also said to contact a certified arborist. ============== "How to stop an olive tree from flowering" http://www.gardenguides.com/100300-stop-olive-trees-flowering.html "....snip....Apply a fruit-eliminating spray containing ethephon. Sprays with ethephon release a plant hormone called ethylene into your olive tree, which prevents it from flowering." Here is a link that might be useful: Flower prevention...See MoreKitchenlady (Tennessee, Zone 7a)
