Putting banana plants to bed for winter
Comments (3)I put wooden stakes around the clump and then wrap landscape fabric around the stakes to make an enclosure which I fill full of oak leaves. I like oak as they remain "fluffy" and do not turn to mush to quick. I cover the top with plastic, but take it off if you have a few nice days to let everything air out. Do not cover the whole thing with plastic, it needs to breath, covering the top to keep most of the rain out should be enough! right now I have leaves around the base of the bananas, but we have not had a hard frost to kill the leaves so I have not fully winterized yet. What I do is wait for the leaves to get killed by frost, take them off at that point and then burry the stalks in the leaf enclosure. I would not take the leaves off if they are still green....See MoreWhat can I put in this poolside pot?
Comments (5)Thanks Daitoum, The palm that died was a Phoenix Canariensis, though I know now that I left snow in its growing point for too long. I thought about a tree fern, but think it just gets too much sun there to thrive. I also have plenty of Musa basjoos in the garden but this spot is to sheltered enough and it would be ripped to shreds very quickly I think. My current thinking is I have a lovely big bird of paradise which doesn't thrive in a softly shady conservatory. I think, for the frost free months, I might sink its current pot in to this one an plant around it with ordinary bedding....See MoreWhat can I put over tarmac so that I can have a patio
Comments (6)I'm not a contractor, but I don't think you can put anything on top of blacktop like decorative stone or tiles. When patios are built they are put on top of several inches of stone of various sizes to create a bed for the stone that will prevent heaving during freeze/thaw cycles. It would probably be a better idea to put decking over it. However, as soon as you permanently cut off your garage from your driveway you may be impairing the value of your property. Is this the only side of your house that has access to a flat piece of ground suitable for a patio or deck? I don't think a fence is a problem. There are plenty of people who fence their backyards and that includes having a fence (that opens) across the driveway. So would just dressing up the area with some planters and patio furniture work for you? An umbrella for the table or a pergola would look nice too....See Morehelp! Comments (39)@J Blake since you already have it you should give it a try. I really like the bench idea and think you should try the one you have first. If you want to use the mirrored console you can add a plant or basket next to it to make it feel like it's taking up more space. Then put a piece of art or mirror above it and add something tall like a lamp to tie the art/mirror and console together. See how this lamp ties together the mirror and the table so the mirror is not floating off by itself? You might need something tall and narrow above the mirrored console to fill up the space....See More- 9 years ago
