Baileys Marvel-a possible bloom...
Comments (6)Thanks Ashley!. I'm hoping for best case- A long lived Mango tree for the bay area, not needing covering for normal winters. And If I plant it in ground-anti gopher cage wiring for sure. This is my second largest Mango I've ever grown outdoors-at over 6'. Lost the first one to 07's freeze. Baileys I beleive, would have made it. I think B.M. would laugh at 29-30f. Almost-lol....See MoreBaileys Mango-whats the story morning glory?
Comments (3)Well,so far April in the SF bay area has been very cool and rainy-Baileys Marvel or B.M.-ehem- hasnt dropped a leaf all winter, including a pair of near 32f nights in December. It would be cruel to have a thriving Mango here that doesnt fruit....See MoreBaileys Marvel flowering below graft...
Comments (10)My tree was not a double graft. Flowering from the rootstock on young trees is an infrequent occurrence, but it does happen. Har M explained that it happens on about 1 in every 1,000 to 2,000 trees in the case of Julie, sometimes even occurring on 6 month old trees. In my case the stress cased by extra fert probably bumped it into the 1 in 1,000 group. You should read some of Laymond Hardy's writings. Many believe him to be on the 'eccentric' side (for lack of a better word). But his 'hormone' experiments are a bit interesting. He would do funny things like put mature budwood in a blender and then inject the solution into the trunk of a juvenile citrus seedling to induce early blooming. Jeff...See MoreWould I be right to consider Baileys Marvel a hardier Haden?
Comments (19)A Bailey's Marvel is an "improved" Haden and descended from Haden. Possibly sweeter or "candy like" from the reviews I've read. Flavor & texture is superior to Haden and well liked, but BM may be a bit harder to get established from what I've read. Kent or VP may be better options if you want a fast growing, trouble free cold hardy tree with traditional Haden flavor. I think Kent is probably your best option. VP is cold hardy, grows fast, but will get to 50' with age - just like a Haden. Your children will eventually need to call the fire department to pick them if not topped periodically. I think Kent stays at a more manageable height. People who have tasted both Kent & VP give the edge to Kent. Kent I have heard may be a more manageable tree when it comes to height. VP is a larger fruit and possibly fastter growing and slightly more cold hardy....See Moregreenman62
