Want to paint oak cabinets white-pictures included please help me
Comments (26)Libby, the beadboard was super easy. Dh is handy, but by no means a pro. And it's a project he's never taken on. We just bough a couple sheets, and he cut them to size. Then nailed with a nail gun. Chaulked around the seams, and put a little piece of trim along the bottom. We also used the zinser primer. And BM satin impervo. We painted the boxes ourselves, and had a painter spray the doors. I love the finish done by spraying it. But, I probably would have been ok with brushing it on ourselves. Because you have SS appliances, I think yours will look amazing. I'm not a fan of white appliances and white cabs. But, I did it anyones. Just to kill off that oak :) we used two colors, BM white dove for tops, and BM baby fawn for bottom cabs. They're too ligth on bottom. Didn't do what I was wanting. So, we'll re paint them whenever I realize I can't stand it any more :) I'm a little over the whole thing for now, lol few before and after beadboard...See Moreoak vs pine vs maple interior doors
Comments (14)Painting can be much more difficult than staining. It depends on who the craftsman is. Painting a 6 panel door must be done according to the manual or it will look terrible. If you choose to paint them, email me and I'll send you the "how to paint a 6 panel door" instructions. Staining it requires knowledge too. The pine should be pre-treated (conditioned) prior to staining since it's a porous wood that absorbs stain unevenly. All paint stores sell the conditioner. After staining, apply at least two coats of varnish or ceramathane with the door is in a horizontal position to prevent runs. If you spot a run after a minute or so, trying to tip off those products creates more of a mess. If you decide to paint, the first coat should be a quality underbody primer. Please.....don't skip the primer. That seals the door and sets it up for the final two coats of paint. An ordinary latex paint will look clumsy on a door. You should learn how to paint with the Waterborne finishes (Muralo Ultra) (BM Impervo) (SW Pro Classic) or a urethane product like Cabinet Coat trim enamel.. Those will provide a hard, porcelain-like finish, which is what performs best on a door. You will also need a high quality brush. A 2" angle sash is best for most hands. Or, you can do like me and use an angle sash to paint the panels, then switch over to a 2 1/2" flat sash brush for the stiles and rails. I wish I had the picture of Moonshadow's doors. She did a magnificent job with Cabinet Coat on hers. My doors are done in Pro Classic and unless you've had some practice with it, it can be very, very difficult to get a professional finish. Comments (63)So many things wrong with all that oak. It's much more than just the color of it. The window configuration around the fireplace is totally unconventional and looks odd, which makes the oak trim stand out as being more wrong. The oak cabinetry is not high end. The cathedral arches are out dated. The plywood oak ends look like low end oak with crazy wide tiger grain. The doors are full overlay with visible unattractive hinges. These are the most unattractive and cheapest options. The stairs are closed stringers with turned balusters. Closed stringers look better with square balusters. Open stringers look more traditional with turned balusters. The newel posts should be boxed and square, not turned. Craftsman stairs, using closed stringers, typically used boxed, large newels, and square balusters. Here you have a mix that doesn't work well. The floors are OK from what I can tell. Definitely paint the window oak....to minimize the weird lines of the windows. Get rid of the early American chairs. The main door is white with oak trim....The contrast is not good. Either paint the doors a darker, complimentary color...or paint the trim off white and then some tasteful accent color on the doors. It looks OK to have a stained door with painted trim....more so than the other way around. Never paint stair treads or handrails. Varnish/poly them always and always. Balusters and stringers and newel posts...are more optional....See MoreMixing red oak and white oak?
Comments (12)If you are looking to keep the mountain feel,: option one: Buy single panel shaker in MDF and paint the doors, leave the trim as oak. Get the same in hollow for closets option two. Buy single panel white oak wood, solid core, for passage/PRIVACY ONLY. DO ALL CLOSETS/doors WITH PAINTED TRIM/mdf doors AS WALL COLOR Anything else is money waste and a fail. Slab style doors are not great painted.........shaker is....See Morecarlos229
