Question about Victorian knives
Comments (6)Hmmm....I did a search for the International pattern....and could find no knives. I have been collecting Whiting Louis VX, which dates from 1890....and for years had a devil of a time finding any knives.....and when I did they had silver plated blades which were very badly worn....and since EBay I have found some in good condition. So I did a search for antique sterling knives....and there are some...not a huge amount...but I did find some. My only conclusion is that during that era the blades were silver plated and wore quickly, and because they had no intrinsic value, as sterling does, they were tossed. Sterling handles were often replaced with stainless new blades....and I like that! I think if I were you I would look for bone or pearl handled knives and use them. Once I was at an auction of a collector who had service for 24 of pearl handled knives and spoons....and an assortment of sterling forks. I bought 8 of the forks for $1 each....the knives went for a lot more. And one of those forks ended up costing me a couple of thousand!! LOL!...See MoreJust curious -- do you have a king or a queen sized bed?
Comments (39)Thanks again for all the great responses here. I'm happy to report that just tonight I finally made my decision and ordered a king! I went with the Novaform memory foam from Costco (they're on sale this week). I'm a bit nervous -- a bed seems like such a crucial purchase and it's so easy to get wrong -- but I feel like anything will be better than our tired old mattress. I need to decide what sort of actual bed to get with it. Since we previously had a queen I can't use the same box springs with the new mattress. I realize no box spring is necessary, but we don't even have a bed frame of any kind. We may buy a really nice bed sometime in the future, but for now I just want to sleep comfortably! I suppose it will be okay on the floor for a while, but I'll need to think of something pretty quickly. I don't think my poor old knees could take getting out a bed on the floor for too long! Thanks again for your input -- it really helped our decision-making process....See MoreCool feature I've just noticed (OT)
Comments (59)If you look on the index, where the list of topics is, on the right, just above, and underneath the post a new message area, and right under the GardenWeb has joined Houzz box), you'll see the mode selector. There's a sorting style dropdown menu that let's you choose to sort by latest activity (like on GW), Featured, Popular, and Unanswered. I don't know who or how they determine Featured and Popular, but I bet there's something in there that's making all these old threads pop up! Farther to the right are the three boxes. The leftmost is for the basic index of thread topics, signified by many lines (3 lines). Middle box has two blobs because when you choose that, the entries are thicker. That's the one I was talking about. In the two bars, middle box, "preview" mode, you see the first two lines of the last post on the thread, as well as the last poster's screen name and avatar, and how old the last post is. Plus, the preview of the first picture posted in the OP post. The one solid box, on the far right, gives you the first two lines of the OP post, indented with its picture preview to the left) and the last two replies to it, but with all the threads strung in a row. This is a great way to see if there's anything new in a slow moving forum. It used to show the full threads, I think, but our threads are too long for that. :)...See MoreI've read so many threads about drawer depths and can use perspective
Comments (18)Drawer Essentials, that second pic makes my heart pitter-patter with organizing love! I've measured what I have available, but need to look at those odd tools like ladles. A fair number of my kitchen things are in storage but I do have my most, and moderate, use items. OK, I'm armed with a list of things to stuff into the display drawers! They're 36" wide drawer stacks on that wall so there should be plenty of room...I hope. I've been saving a lot of vertical storage pics these last few weeks, so that's definitely on my mind. As far as what and where, it's a work in progress. I forget what I have because so much is packed away. Pantry - canned and dried goods, quick breakfast and lunch foods, items waiting to go into point of use rotation, basic food storage needs, ziplock bags, DH will have a junk bin somewhere in this area unless I can figure out an option in the laundry room. Bulk flours/sugars/etc. Baking area - Measuring tools, scoops/spoons, mixer accessories, sifter, wax paper, cling-wrap (may be in secondary prep), pie plates, baking tins. Sink - colanders Trash/recycling. We compost but I've realized that it needs to be taken out after prep or they let it sit. Prep - knives, can opener, graters, other prep utensils, towels, bowls, mortars and pestles, food processor, blender, casserole dishes stored vertically (or big pots) depending on room. Cook - spatulas, spoons, ladles, etc., saucepans, skillets and sauté pans, vertically if possible. Secondary prep/oven area - towels, oven mitts, foil, parchment paper, accessories for oven and TO on counter, thermometers, tupperware type containers. Deep drawer will be for large pots (or casserole dishes). I'll have to work in there before I know how I really want the large drawers arranged. Above oven - sheets pans, cooling racks, oven racks Below oven - other bakeware or grilling items Pullout for broom, mop, Swiffer, paper towels, cleansers. I'm still pondering how to utilize it well. I need something there for my side-opening oven clearance. Cleanup zone is opposite and there are drawers and cabinets for silverware, dishes, glasses. Fridge wall is ~60" and perpendicular to the work zones. Between the dining room and next to the fridge I have an 18" drawer stack for coffee/tea items, cups, travel mugs (tall!), shelves for cookbooks, above, and a squat upper cab for vertical platter storage. Cabinet above fridge - infrequent use items I'm remembering more tall things during this exercise. And, I'm feeling overwhelmed and have to take a break! I'll read about someone else's indecisiveness/conundrums for a while, LOL....See More- 9 years ago
