azabeeh, are you sure that they are bees?

If they are bees, not wasps, no effort should be made to kill them since bees are now endangered species. Bees that nest int the ground are usually solitary and do not have large nests, but wasps will build up large nests in the ground.

Properly identify what you have and then talk with the people at your local office of your state universities Cooperative Extension Service office about how to control them.

I would bet on them being yellow-jackets, which often live in the ground (and decaying wood, and anywhere they feel like), in which case, you can spray away freely.

kimmq! Don't tell people that bees are endangered....that's simply not true! Also, yellow jackets are a type of wasp, and frequently construct their nests in the ground.

rhizo, there are two species of bees trhat have been listed as endangered this year alone. If you are not aware that bees are endangered I am truly sorry for that.

HONEYbees are an imported species of bee that can never be designated as endangered or not. I believe that you are using the term 'endangered' incorrectly. It is misleading at best, and certainly draws attention away from the facts.

Our native bee species are doing well, for the most part, though several native bees species in Hawaii have been placed on the endangered species list. Please educate me as to the two species you are referring to.

All of our pollinators have a tough time in these days of excessive and ignorant use of pesticides, of non-stop development, of vast acres of monocultural field crops, etc. But tossing the term "endangered" around so incorrectly is not the least bit helpful to an intelligent discussion of conservation.

Kimmq, you linked a 20 yr old writing from the NY Times Opinion Pages. One persons opinion, not a scientific document.

I called an exterminator to deal with a large (very large) bald faced hornets nest overhanging my circular drive last year. After removal - and paying him, not wanting to tackle that number of hornets from a ladder myself - I found this:

I don't know how many such companies might be available, but a search in your area might turn something up. I book marked the webpage on the chance I'm faced with the problem again.

where is OP?? .. or did you guys scare her away ...

if you have kids.. and this is spot where the nest can be disturbed [or near teh door.. or in the veg garden where you need to work] ... i would not hesitate to go full bore nuclear.. and get rid of it ... as they can be rather aggressive if the nest is disturbed ...

i would like to get all warm and fuzzy about not bothering such.. but if its between me, my family or kids and ma nature.. i will protect my family ...

if on the other hand.. its out back on the acreage ... who cares ... they can have the space ...
