Why are my morning glory seedlings dying?

This is the second year this is happening--I started them indoors from seed, once they are about two inches they start looking sad and dying. I am growing a lot from seed and this is only happening with my MG, same thing happened last year. I am really worried because I do love MG and they were always easy and great to grow from seed. Any ideas? Thanks

Without seeing them all we can do is make a guess and damp-off, a fungus disease is the most likely guess. It is caused by overly wet soil and lack of sufficient air circulation and is marked by a darkening of the stems at the soil line and then collapse. Otherwise root rot from overly wet soil would be the next best guess.

But to be really helpful we'd need a photo and many more details about your growing methods - container size, soil used, amount of lights, watering regimen, etc.

Why indoors? They love the sun, also stay away from potting soil, just plant on your native soil and barely cover seeds.

tlbean, my MGs always come up in 2-3 days as well. I also start them indoors, I've found they slow down a little bit once they get 3-4 true leaves, I figure they're working on their root system perhaps? Congrats on all of your MG seedlings! If you grow anything else don't be discouraged when they don't sprout instantly like MGs! I always get spoiled with them and get impatient when other seeds take several weeks to germinate!

Morning glory and moonflower dying off

I had them indoors originally but gradually put them outdoors longer throughout the day but even doing that they were dying very shortly after germination, all of my other flowers are doing wonderfully after the move and transplant, it seems to just be these that are having a hard time for some reason. I've always germinated my plants indoors and then shortly after germination moved them outside the minute the weather is right after a short hardening off and last frost has past(ours was calendered for last week) the reason I only germinate indoors and then move out is mainly for placement because i have a large garden area and we have alot of ducks and birds that come and pick up the seeds if they're directly sown outside. They've also always seemed to do better then waiting until fully grown for transplant but this is my first time doing moonflowers and morning glories

Yes, MG do well in direct sun. . . but when it gets too hot the flower closes. (I think thats why) maybe they close later in the day because they are MORNING glories. . . I grow mine in full sun until about 1 PM then they are in bright shade and this particular spot seems to make them happy, the flower doesnt close. I don't start them in pots, I simply poke em in the ground a few inches. I do this as soon as the ground thaws from cold winter. They are hardy lil buggers. I have new MG seedlings every year that made it thru our winters and grew beautifully. I agree they look a little stressed from being grown inside (not enough light) the transplant stressed them and now a shock due to the direct sunlight. If you do plant more seeds they will live happy in with the weak ones. Im guessing in due time you wont even know which ones were suffering. Welcome to the world of gardening AKA trial and error. Any thoughts about why holes in my Morning Glory leaves?

Usually larvae of Golden Tortoise Beetle make holes in my MG leaves. The plants are not affected if infestation is not totally defoliating the vine. The larvae cover themselves so they resemble a bird dropping.

The same thing has happened to mine. I'll try to post a pic for better observation on my behalf. This is my first time with Morning Glories but I've loved them since I was a child. I started them from a seed using the elementary school method of putting them in a zip lock bag along with a moistened paper towel. They grew to about 1 to 2 inches before I planted them. I unfortunately put them in seed starting potting soil and just came to realize that the pots didn't have any drain holes. Ugh! Therefore by reading your comments I must assume that my soil is just too moistened for these Morning Glories. Thanks for the help!
