Morning glory and moonflower dying off

I recently germinated some morning glories (about three week ago) and they germinated great until I had to move them into a large tub because they were dying in the small pots..I also sowed in a few more seeds that just won't germinate along with moonflowers that aren't germinating also...they are by an old stump that gets good sunlight all throughout the day and it hasnt been too extremely hot here in Maryland but most have died off and the rest are just wilting away and turning a yellow brown and wilted. Ive tried watering them more along with witholding water to see if that would perk them up or just watering where I put the new seeds.

What am I doing wrong? Can these even be saved or would I be better off trying to start over

did you transplant them from indoors.. outdoors.. into sunshine??? .. looks like frost or sun burn ...lack of hardening off ...

after transplant.. i would have left them in shade for a dew days.. or week ... until the roots got working ..

yes.. i would replant .. but i would leave these here.. just to see if they make it ... at best you will have lost a week or two .. and at this time of year.. its no big deal ...

heck.. here in MI ... if i were playing with seed ... it would still be 2 weeks or so.. before i would start them ... since i have a potential last frost of 5/25 or so

and you ask .. why does he provide a date in this post.. as compared to all the other posts.. where he says its not a calendar thing ...

because that date was mom and dads anniversary .... and in metro detroit .. that was the day we all went to the nursery.. and bought the tender annuals to plant in the garden ... in 50 odd years ... 99% certain date of no further frost ...

which really means nothing as to where you are ... just a fond memory ...

I do think you have too many for that size pot. Your plants will become root bound and won't stay healthy. You definitely don't need that many plants to cover the area it appears you are interested in covering. The strings you have will be lucky to support one vine each, if they continue to be as healthy as they seem now. Martha

I have both, the moonflowers aren't too bad but i've found morning glory seedling all over my yard. But it isn't a big deal. I actually dig up the earth around them and transplant them somewhere else they might look good. This year I even found two in my container, carrot garden. How they got there I have no idea. But they are bothso pretty it is worth planting. You will know the morning glory seedling when you see it. Just pluck it up and transplant or break it up and throw it down.

It's normal for MGs to look a little "wilty" in the most intense heat, so don't let that determine your watering schedule. It's also normal for the older bottom leaves to yellow (I just pick mine off) so don't let that determine your watering schedule. As long as the top is still green and growing, I'd just hold off until I noticed either a huge slowdown in growth or else a "wilty" look that doesn't bounce back overnight. (Look at them first thing in the morning to see if they've plumped back up.) They really are quite hardy once they're established, and they really do like to be "stressed out" a bit in order to flower. I don't know if this is really the reason, but my own personal theory on why they flower is this: When food and water are abundant, they figure it's party time -- let's grow as much as we can while the gettin's good. (Kinda like "make hay while the sun shines".) But if food and/or water are getting scarce, they realize that their demise may be coming, and if they want to keep their genes going on, they'll have to create offspring (seeds) before they die. (Like I said, that's just the theory I worked out in my head.)

Yes, MG do well in direct sun. . . but when it gets too hot the flower closes. (I think thats why) maybe they close later in the day because they are MORNING glories. . . I grow mine in full sun until about 1 PM then they are in bright shade and this particular spot seems to make them happy, the flower doesnt close. I don't start them in pots, I simply poke em in the ground a few inches. I do this as soon as the ground thaws from cold winter. They are hardy lil buggers. I have new MG seedlings every year that made it thru our winters and grew beautifully. I agree they look a little stressed from being grown inside (not enough light) the transplant stressed them and now a shock due to the direct sunlight. If you do plant more seeds they will live happy in with the weak ones. Im guessing in due time you wont even know which ones were suffering. Welcome to the world of gardening AKA trial and error. I had them indoors originally but gradually put them outdoors longer throughout the day but even doing that they were dying very shortly after germination, all of my other flowers are doing wonderfully after the move and transplant, it seems to just be these that are having a hard time for some reason.

I've always germinated my plants indoors and then shortly after germination moved them outside the minute the weather is right after a short hardening off and last frost has past(ours was calendered for last week) the reason I only germinate indoors and then move out is mainly for placement because i have a large garden area and we have alot of ducks and birds that come and pick up the seeds if they're directly sown outside. They've also always seemed to do better then waiting until fully grown for transplant but this is my first time doing moonflowers and morning glories

They could bounce back. Patience is indicated.
