Cheer Detergent Mystery?
Comments (20)(May I pause for a really big chuckle here ...?) Truly, I have been using regular Cheer powder in my Asko and Miele (all 220v) machines for well more than a decade. Back in the day (c 2002-ish when I discovered this forum) I used to report using regular Cheer powder here and received almost universal condemnation ("it's guaranteed to ruin your machines, foster bio-flim, leave dirty clothes, mold outbreaks, scale on my heating elements, ground down bearings and water seals in the machine, etc.") And you know what? NONE of those things happened, except that I got tired of being harshly chastised by all the "experts" here so I became quite cagey about what I did use. I generally described it as just a "plain-Jane, big brand, non-HE powder", and refused to be more specific than that. Cheer is a great powdered detergent and I have nothing but praise for it. The only place I can reliably find it now is at Target, however. I orginally choose it because it was low-sudsing, long before there was such a thing as HE formulations. Those of you who have signed on to FL bandwagon more recently know only about HE stuff. Prior to that you looked for the words "low-sudsing", if you wanted a good product for FLs. All those holdover, pre-European invasion FL machines needed low-sudsing for the same reasons we need it now. Cheer powder was one of the mainstays in those days. That it also has enzymes and no OBAs and excellent rinsing qualities makes it just about perfect for me and my water chemistry and my wash habits. It's also quite inexpensive, and I find that I can use much less than called for, but that may be mostly a function of my water chemistry, YMMV on that. Anyhoo, welcome to the Cheer-powder fan club! I hope you will be as pleased as I have been. BTW, I have "cured" a couple of cases of stinky (bio-film/mold) machines simply by getting their owners to wash a couple of loads per week in hotter water, using Cheer powder almost exclusively, and generally less than a full dose at that. My only worry is that if it gets too wildly popular some product manager at the factory will notice and think that it needs "improving" to furtherr increase sales and alter (ruin) the current formula to fancy it up. Comments (0)So after hours of perusing this forum, I'm more confused than ever. Is there a current consensus on whether liquid detergents are to blame for buildup of slimy scum on the outer drum? Or is it only liquid when used with cold washes? Will regular use of a "sanitize" high temp load or a load with Oxy eliminate that build up? (I use the sanitize at least once a week with sheets and towels, so I suspect/hope I don't have that nasty buildup.) I've had a FL for about 2 years with absolutely no problems with odors. I've just decided I'd like to switch to a more eco-friendly laundry regime and want to find an alternative to TideHE---though other than the fact that it's a huge brand name petrochemical, I generally think TideHE works great for us. I'd love to find these results in a natural brand, preferably a powder because it would have less packaging and less fillers. So for powders, I had narrowed my choices to Persil and Charlies. I love the way powdered Persil smells, and I absolutely *want* to love it. Reminds me of my childhood detergent. I can see my mom folding our childhood laundry when I smell it. But it didn't seem to clean anything in my wash. Most of my kids jeans and tee shirts smelled and looked like they were still dirty after washing with Persil. So that's out. I know lots of people love Charlie's... my mom included. She just gave me a bag of it to try. But it doesn't seem to clean my clothes as well as the tide, and I tend to like a tiny bit of a scent to my clothes when they're done. I'm going to continue trying it, but I just don't yet feel like a convert. So I keep coming back to the liquid detergent options. I'm considering Method's HE Liquid and Seventh Generation Liquid HE. Both seem to have some sort of plant based softener, so I'm wondering if that's potentially going to gunk up the machine worse than something like a TideHE liquid. Or is that a non-issue if I'm using a sanitize mode once in a while and not over-dosing. Thanks, Kmama...See MoreNew Cheer Bright Clean Concentrated Powder Detergent
Comments (55)I Beth..hope you and the kiddos are all well. it could be it was washed more than the others, who knows...did you by any chance wash it with the A&H? I have blamed that detergent for slight fading. I don't think its from OB's that would cause more of a dusty look as if you dusted furniture with the garment. But to prevent any more fading I'd recomment cheer powder..but add the Cheer to the washer first, there's just a small amount of Sodium percarbonate in cheer not enough to fade colors but just enough to neutralize the chlorine in tap water, so by adding the cheer to the wash water first it will prevent the chlorine from causing fading..the sodium percarbonate in the cheer is the secret ingredient and why Cheer is considered a **Color Guard** detergent lol....See MoreAnyone here use Persil laundry detergent?
Comments (58)I don't mind most scents in products, but with clothes nothing beats the smell of clothes dried outside on a clothesline. I guess I remember my mother hanging sheets and other items outside. And they didn't smell like fresh linen or fresh cotton artificial scents. Persil is very expensive around here at the grocery store. I tend to get what is on sale. If Tide is on sale I snatch it up. It cleans most consistently especially whites. I still wear white undershirts under dress shirts and don't like them getting dingy....See MoreMizLizzie
