Wired brushed engineered floors? Thinking of vinyl, maybe??? Help!!!!!

Hi I am looking to install 1400 sf wire brushed engineered/ hardwood, including my kitchen. I have 2 children, and we previously installed beautiful medium tone hard maple and it was a disaster, It showed everything, even if I dropped a grain of salt. Every time my kids dropped toys it would nick the floor. We moved out of that house recently and we are remodeling this new home and want to pick a more durable floor, hence the wire brushed option. What are your experiences with these types of flooring?

But what's crazy, we went shopping for hardwood today at 2 different places, Floor and decor and a local shop and both sales people recommended vinyl to me..... are you kidding me????? It's not about the money, it's about durability. They said nothing will nick it, the sun won't bleach it and it's water resistant. Plus they have the look of wired brushed and wide plank..... I am SOOOOOOO torned..... Please help!

The thing at the price point of my house (650K) I don't think I should put vinyl flooring..... please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aquaguard is not vinyl. It is a water "proof" laminate that is built using a composite core (instead of wood fibre core). Aquaguard is one of the most expensive (high end) laminates on the market.

I have cork floors in $1.5M condos...I have "laminate" looking floors in $2M dollar homes. Your price for your home is not what makes or breaks your flooring choice. It is part of the discussion, but not the end requirement. Your household is what determines the flooring requirement (and the people living on it).

A home with a certain value can look at solid wood flooring. You can get a factory finished wire brushed floor in a solid hardwood. There's no doubt about it. The PRICE will, of course, be 3-5 TIMES more than the Aquaguard....but it will be a solid hardwood floor = 60 - 80 years worth of service. That's one of the highest levels of flooring we have.

If intrinsic value (in the floor and in the home) worries you, then you are welcome to work with a solid hardwood with a factory finished wire brush application. These are stunning floors with breath taking price tags....but well worth it if intrinsic value of the home is the top priority.

Personally I would get the floor that works for my family RIGHT NOW....and in 7-10 years (when selling becomes an option and my floors are 'out dated') I would then install a more up-dated floor (type and appearance TBD for the sale date/market in the area).

Aquaguard will give you what you want...and because it is NOT a vinyl, it won't have problems in sunlight (like most vinyls will).

Have fun. Make YOURSELF happy FIRST....you can satisfy "market demand" at a later date.

Definately Owens for several reasons. Very thick wear layer and much longer lengths. In fact if you wanted all lengths over four foot you could add an extra 15% on the order to cull out the two and three footers. Lenths up to eight feet, which is extremely rare in engineered. It's also not easy to find those kind of lengths in common solids as well. Owens is an unfinished product. People will be in awe when they see the final result. Pictured is a white oak select.

For wood floor cleaning, I recommend buying and using a Bona cleaning kit. It includes a spray bottle with an alcohol based cleaner, a mop handle, dusting pad and microfiber cleaning pad. I use this on my own floors. After sweeping or vacuuming I spray or mist the cleaner on the floor and use the mop to remove the cleaner and dirt. If I get a real dirty spot I'll clean it with a damp towel first. I've yet to see dirt that couldn't be removed with this method. Once the cleaning pad gets dirty I wash it in the sink then throw it in the washing machine. This process minimizes the amount of water the wood is subjected to. When my bottle runs out I refill it with 2oz. of Woodwise cleaner concentrate and add water. The Woodwise concentrate is a very reasonably priced but hard to find. I've seen Bona products at Lowes, Target and Bed Bath & Beyond. Other than that I'll occasionally use a dry Swiffer to pick up dust and hair and mineral spirits for grease or tar. I really like the Freefit. I sold some VCT to a friend to use in his bike shop. He wanted wood floor in one area but it included the side door where all his deliveries arrrived so I recommended Freefit. It's holding up well despite having lots of boxes slid over it. Later I did some Freefit in the Bamboo look for his mom as a favor. She had one of those glue-edge vinyls that failed. I've seen Freefit in several local retail shops also, including a restaurant with a bar. I was (and probably still am) a bit skeptical of laying it loose but it seems to work as advertised. Another thing to consider when looking at the engineered floors is plank length. I just realized why I didn't like some of the photos I saw ... they had too many short pieces which gives the floor a choppy look and to me, it looks too much like a tile effect. The Uptown Floors suggested above sound great, and I will look at them more closely, but they still have "shorter" board (12" to 8 ft). I am looking at another company with board lengths from 3 ft to 12 ft. Those longer boards make a big difference in the overall look in a larger open floor plan. The longer boards do cost more, so I need to do some more comparisons and value of spending more for a more pleasing look. Their other specs are mostly similar. I think floors are going to be my hardest decision!

Thought I would also update this thread since it popped back up. We moved into our new build 2 months ago and ended up choosing engineered wood for most of the house, except the mudroom, laundry room and their connecting long back hallway, which got tile. I can close this area off and the dogs stay here if we are gone for several hours. Their food and water is also kept in the laundry room. The floors are Duchateau - Riverstone collection - Sava color. So far they have not shown any scratches from the dogs making the crazy run to the front door when they hear the doorbell and/or fedex! The floors have a rustic look and slight texture that will make it easier to hide any scratches and dents.
