Pylot: I recently returned from visiting a fruitgrowing friend near Richmond, who had three little 2nd year Tomcots with severely wilting leaves, which happened after the first real warmup of temperatures. I asked him if the trees had been submerged for any time this spring, and the answer was yes, for nearly 48 hours after a heavy rain. His soil is sandy, but the land is flat, and the subsoil does not drain that well. To make a long story short, we dug up one of the trees (they were also planted too deeply -- with two-thirds of the rootstock stem buried), and found that nearly all the roots were dead. Dead roots can't supply anything -- be it minerals or even water, so they were unable to provide the leaves with moisture when the heat arrived. These trees went from drowning straight to dying of thirst. I am pretty well convinced that drowning of the roots, both from inadequate drainage and planting too deeply, is a leading cause of failure for young fruit trees. Roots can grow down and out to seek moisture, but can't grow upward to escape when there is too much of it. I'm no expert, but that looks a lot like what I am starting to suspect on my plants: Tomato Psyllids. I detailed it over on my blog with lots of high-res photos. You can compare your problem with mine, although mine aren't showing a lot of yellowing - which is apparently called Psyllid-yellows? I had no idea what a psyllid was until last night - so I may be completely wrong...but it might be worth a look. Here is a link that might be useful: Psyllid Blog Post

Forgot to mention it, but you can see it in the photos, the veins of the Early Girls especially, but on all the tomatoes in general, are purpleish. The leaves aren't turning colors, but they're kind of tough and leathery. I'm starting to feel like a garden hypochondriac. Every time I look up a new tomato disease or pest, I'm convinced that's what I have, so I'm hoping you all can help me narrow it down. After looking at pictures, I'm thinking maybe the bugs are thrips, and maybe they've spread TSWV to the plants, but some of the physical symptoms of TSWV don't sound exactly right on the money. I'm so confused. I always thought gardening was so simple - throw plants in the ground, water, voila! Not so, I'm afraid. Soooo not so.
