Where do you buy your hosta?
Comments (10)he is talking about hosta virus x(hvx), which appeared at retail outlets several years ago. it manifests some symptoms that are visible in the progressed stage such as the "bleeding" term. you don't want to introduce the virus to your hosta population so would be wise to look closely at them before purchasing. more information at the link below if you navigate to that particular section. i saw (what i think was) so much of it at one of our local stores that i called the ala. dept. of agriculture and industries about it. they did meet me there and he told me they would pull the plants from the shelves. that was a few years back. on a side note, we (he) noticed that they were also selling the new dark-leaved mimosa cultivar 'summer chocolate'. this is a plant that is a exotic invasive pest in our area. i left while he pursued the garden center manager and they were gone by my next visit, either removed or sold. Here is a link that might be useful: hosta library...See MoreWhere to buy Hosta
Comments (56)Bridgewood has become my go-to hosta seller. If I'm not picking something up in the neighborhood swap, I go to Bridgewood (which is close enough to my home and zone). I got an email last week that 2015 spring shipping is starting (to points south of me). The 'ugly plant sale' always has something I can't live without. I also like that he deliberately sells 1 eye plants; I use to infill my hosta plots....See MoreWhere do you buy your hostas from?
Comments (24)I like webwalkway.com, Naylor Creek, Hallson's, Northern Grown, White Oak, Bridgewood, and the weekly Saturday farmer's markets in both Iowa City and Des Moines. The first six do mail order, the farmer's markets usually have several hosta sellers with a pretty good selection and some of the more unusual or newer hostas. If you live in an area with a farmer's market, check it out--it's surprising how many markets have at least one person with hostas....See MoreKeeping deer away from your hosta???
Comments (35)Cricket Love, believe me once it sunk in, I was happy my yard is so private. I probably would be in jail or mental hospital if the neighbors had seen me. I was devastated, crying, swearing, stomping you name it I was doing it. LOL I will wish you luck but be prepared. It is a fight, you have to be committed. They can wear you down. It hurts to look at your gardens all pretty and come out and it is all gone in one night. They survived they came back this year so I have been out with all my sprays and anything that I can do to have my gardens. Solid fence does not work have that on one side, Believe me they will jump. I have sat in my morning room and watched them flying over the fence right into the middle of my hosta bed. mosswitch is right groundhogs will eat your hostas. So I have double trouble. I constantly have had them eat a garden and I find the hole stuff it with used kitty litter top it off with a three bags of dog poop. I have a Mastiff so it is big poop. That keeps them out for about a month. I did not have the heart to take a pic of the entire garden but I took a picture of my Sum and Substance before and after. Just a sample to give you a visual of what to expect. Do you think you can take this? LOL...See MoreParadise Alcove LLC
