Where do you buy your hostas from?

I am new to collecting hostas. I have a few that I have bought from locate nurseries. But I am in a rural area and the selection is very slim. Can anyone suggest a trustworthy online site.

Any opinions on HostasDirect.com good or bad?

I got 4 hosta as gifts from Hosta direct. They were beautiful one eye TC plants, well packed and in good condition when I got them.

Hallstons is my new favorite. I placed an order a couple weeks ago. One of the hostas I really wanted was sold out, and Chris told me the ones they had were too small. When my order arrived, Chris had mailed me the out of stock hosta for free. It was as big as many others I've ordered from other comnpanies. All the others were nice and big too and now doing great in my gardens. I definitely will order from them again.

I love growing my own plants, so I will knock on doors and ask people for seeds and cuttings. I've made some great garden friends in the process, one elderly lady who nearly landscaped my whole yard because I offered to help her clear out overgrown yard for the plants. She had some seriously gorgeous large bromeliads that sold for $50 each at the one place you could buy them in the area. I must have gotten $1,000 worth or bromeliads and other plants from her for 8 hours of work. We remained friends and I got even more plants from her in years to come. I also trade plants and seeds with people online and off, and dig up, get seeds from, or take cuttings from beautiful blooming natives from the side of the road. I have no pride when it comes to my garden. LOL Of course, I buy half-dead perennials from Lowe's and WalMart markdown racks and bring them back to live. I also live in an apartment complex and have gotten some plants people left behind or gave to me when they moved. I also used to belong to a community garden and got quite a few free plants and seeds from there. I was just figuring how much I've spent over the past 3 years since I"ve lived in this apartment on plants, and it came out to less than $50 and most of that was fertilizer and potting soil. Speaking of potting soil, Lowe's will sometimes mark down broken bags, because they can't sell them for full price. I got 5 bags of nice, organic soil for 50% off by offering to take the broken bags off their hands for a discount. Same for plants with broken pots. I got a beautiful peach tree once for 1/2 price because the pot had split down the side and wouldn't hold water, so it was drying out and dying. But the best and most treasured seeds and plants I get are from GWers. I have such good friends here who regularly send me plants and seeds for no reason at all except they know I love growing from seed and don't have much of a budget. I always pass the favor forward or send them something I know they are looking for.

Adair, You could try to locate garden centres in your area via www.411.ca Sorry, but can you remind us of what your plans were again? Are you creating a new bed? For a bed, I would suggest simple adding bagged soil. For a larger area like covering an entire yard, go with truckload of earth. What you'd like to look for is one that is close to your location and so costs of trucking in the soil is low. You can get soil by the ton, depending on how large an area you need to improve. And what you'd like to look for is a garden centre that allows you to customize your soil mixes. You will want to know the cost of delivery. Ianna

Don't want to violate any GW rules. We sell a few hostas, but we're not a nursery. We have usually a couple of hundred garden visitors a year and visitors are always welcome... it's all about sharing our hosta obsession with other like minds. So along that line, I'll respond as a gardener and someone who welcomes visitors... Unlike Solberg, I still know what a pair of scissors looks like I've worked hard to develop and maintain my status as RHOC (Relatively Harmless Old Curmudgeon) and here come folks poking holes in it! Used to do the motorcycle thing... if I do get back to it, I don't think I'd qualify for Sons of Anarchy... maybe the spinoff series - "Grandpas of Where-did-I-put-my-helmet?!" Thanks for all the kind words... I read the article and found myself wishing we could go visit those nice folks at their garden... they sound a lot nicer than I am! Thanks, Don! Was honored this spring when Don Rawson visited... long way from Michigan... I sure enjoyed learning from him! (Not to mention great "garden gifts"... won't mention the hosta as I don't see it in the Hosta Library yet... not sure what Don has told the world about it yet...) I may have complicated things a few years back when I forgot my GW name and password and finally just created new ones... but we've been comparing notes for a long time!

i buy them.. when it gets to the point I HAVE TO HAVE THEM ... pshaw on state inspected nurseries .... the inspector comes once a year in the spring.. when most hosta problems are not evident ... they try .. but i wouldn't bet any money on such .... the only cycle i know of.. well .. two ... sellers who have potted stock.. and know they will lose 10 to 25% over wintering in pots... and wanting to avoid dealing with such.. would rather in late summer ... get rid of them.. at a bargain ... and the other cycle ... first year out.. 50 bucks... second year 30 .. third year 15 .. 4th year ... 5 to 10 dollars ... that used to be the cycle.. but now ... that is probably even shorter .... try to avoid those HAVE TO HAVE PLANTS .... and you will save a lot of money .. if they are good growers.. they will be back next year .. and a lot cheaper ... good luck ken

I'll definitely second the vote for Hallsons and I also like Naylor Creek. I don't recall having ordered from HostasDirect so I can't comment on them.

Hallson's is my first choice.

I also have ordered from, and been very happy with, Direct Source.

Plant Delights and White Oaks both ship quality product. Plants Delights a little more pricy but always a great healthy plant.

Here is another vote for Hallson's. I also like Northern Grown Perennials as well as Naylor. White Oak is good, but they are finished until next spring.

One of my favorite places, although I don't order online, is Foxfire Gardens. Since it's about a two hour drive, I usually visit a trusted local place, but they don't have a website.

Your from zone 5 were exactly are you from, IL, IN?
On your "My Page" it doesn't state. Even though you may be rural you may be close enough to drive to a good nursery.

I don't do mail order but I did use one source recently.
They were professional and I received a nice hosta that I couldn't get from other sources.

And lets not forget our own Diggin' Dutchman (John) and Hostasgalore (Jamie not the imposter) if you decide to go the eBay route. I have gotten wonderful plants from both of them.

Hallson's is #1 on my list also. This year on my 2nd order I received one at half price because he thought it was a little small. I also received another at regular price that had 10 eyes.

Well,I say hostas are where you find them! I don't do mail order,because I did once and got lousy plants! I go to local nurseries,(there are a couple near me),and I visited Van Wades in Ohio once and got several from him. Also,if I find some at Lowes or Home Depot,I will get them. Phil

Be very, very careful buying from the big box stores. Much to my disgust I have recently dicovered two, maybe three of my big box purchases are infected with HVX. I'm not happy about having to get rid of my Hosta babies...they're like family. I'm praying there is no cross contamination with the Hostas I've gotten from Plant Delights. I'm a HUGH fan of PD and will no longer complain about the cost of their hostas >:)

I like webwalkway.com, Naylor Creek, Hallson's, Northern Grown, White Oak, Bridgewood, and the weekly Saturday farmer's markets in both Iowa City and Des Moines. The first six do mail order, the farmer's markets usually have several hosta sellers with a pretty good selection and some of the more unusual or newer hostas. If you live in an area with a farmer's market, check it out--it's surprising how many markets have at least one person with hostas.

I live in the middle of MI lower pennisula.
I am hoping to make a trip to Hallson's sometime this summer. I would love to see the plants before I buy.
