Need hardy yellow, red and lavender HT-Zone 5
Comments (13)Michael, I think the smaller bushes might be almost 1 1/2" wide. One I believe is a Gemini (beautiful peachy pink with some salmon color in it). It did beautiful for years, last year it looked dead. I was told to dig it out. I waited. It was one of my most beautiful bushes. Glad I waited. This year--told to dig it out. Now in the last week--I see some growth on the bottom. I will wait. The other bushes that are smaller width wise--I don't even know what they are. One is orange with a yellowy center. When it fades out, it almost turns a cantaloupe color. A friend bought it for me, so I don't know the name. The other smaller bushes were there when we bought the house--(red), don't know what they are. The orange ones grow about 2 feet tall, red ones grow 3-4 feet tall. The blank space that is noticeable is between the smaller red &orange bush because they never seem to get any wider to fill in the space. Years ago, I tried two lavender bushes---gorgeous and very healthy for as long as they lived. Yet, they only lived about 4 years, so I gave up on the lavender even though they were gorgeous to look at, healthy while they lived & held up in a vase for a long time. That's why I'm tempted.....but if they are not good (even the yellow) in Zone 5--I need to stick with what is excellent in Zone 5. I think I will dig out the David Austin Othello. Half the bush is dead cane with thorns big enough to take a hand off, the other half is a lot of foliage. That bush I've been tempted over the years to dig it out, but I have this "thing" about killing living things; yet it blooms maybe 5 roses once or twice all season. Someone talked me into this one..... Arghhhh? Sad to say, but this is the one I did not protect with a collar this winter. I just threw some mulch around it. First off, a collar would not fit & ran out of collars. Hoped it would succumb to the weather....See MoreWhen to plant About Face in zone 5
Comments (11)Fall planting is very iffy for cold zones. The plants do not get a chance to settle in before the freeze sets in. I've had such terrible luck with it that I've quit doing it altogether. And for the most part I was planting potted roses not bare roots which have even less root ball to survive with. Since you've already ordered them you'll have to plant them though. I don't think you can leave bare root plants packaged for the entire winter and have them survive. If it were me I'd pot them up and put them in a garage or shed for the winter. If you can't do that plant them deep and then mulch them high. This might even be a case where I'd suggest the dreaded rose cones,.with the tops cut off, since the roses will already be cut very short for shipping. In the future you can order the roses now but have shipping delayed until spring when they'll have a much better chance of surviving. By the way, my Angel Face, even though she is a terrible black spot magnet and leafless much of the season, is over 40 years old and has survived every type of winter imaginable with little to no protection like a champion! It is green nearly to the tips coming out of every winter. You may have more die back than me because you're a zone colder but I'll bet she winters for you with out any problems! Not all modern Hts and Floris are sissies. I think a lot of those zone ratings are nuts. I know a lot of people in zone 5 here in Michigan that grow MANY of those types of roses with no winter protection and they come back faithfully year after year. The only way to know if a rose will work for you is to grow it!...See MoreSpring is the best time for Heucheras (Zone 5a IL)
Comments (20)Vivian: I came across Georgia Peach at the nursery today and was going to buy it on your recommendation until I saw the price $21.99. I think that is the most expensive Euchera I have ever seen. I have a Hort society bus tour coming up in June and I think I will wait until then and see if I can find it a little cheaper. Yours is lovely but yikes that price seemed steep....See MoreThe truth about my zone 5 roses in spring
Comments (74)rosecanadian, It is surprising! We don't do much. My husband mixes up a batch of miracle grow and puts 1/3 of a pitcher on each rose once a year and that is it. Other than that we prune off the dead cane in the spring. When deadheading or pruning we try not to let debris fall in the rose. So why do they do so well? One is I think we get healthy stock from High Country Roses. We did get one virused rose from Jackson and Perkins. As soon as I saw the virus we pulled it out. The other reason may be that there is alot of air space between the roses. We have very dry weather and the roses get water through a drip system. So no humidity to really foster diseases. Also being in rocks that heat up so much probably keeps the environment hostile to rose issues. We do get ear wigs and Japanese Beetles. The JB cause the most damage. I think I've also seen rose midges but not in enough volume to see damage. But we will probably never get the huge gorgeous roses that I see some posting from more hospitable climates. Sheila, Voles can be confounding! We have had them wipe out whole beds. We ended up putting snap traps with peanut butter in their tracks and caught them pretty quickly. To keep the dogs out of the traps we put rose cages around them and pinned them to the ground. However having a bull snake around is better at keeping them in check....See MoreLee B
