The Kitchen Table

2nd one in 46 years!

A brand new bedroom set! We bought the first new one in 1978 and are finally replacing it. We have replaced mattresses, but this is big time for me!!! We have all ways "made do" and used many hand me downs and garage sale furniture thru the years. It's being delivered tomorrow, can't wait!

One of the good things of "making do" is that my 4 kids only had $10,000 of college loan each when they got out of college!

Welcome back to the wonderful world of gardening! :) (I'm in a happy mood because all of my crocus are blooming!) Without going into too much detail, rotating is used mainly for two reasons: to help prevent the build-up of disease and to help avoid depletion of the soil of certain substances. Any basic gardening (vegetable) book will usually go into detail. But essentailly it boils down to moving plants so that you don't grow the same types of plant in a spot year after year. I started listing what shouldn't go where, but really it is easier if you look in a book. Or online. But corn next to lettuce isn't a problem, whereas peppers where your tomatoes were last year might be. Cheers!

Carrie, you probably have Asao or Kakio- both group 2's, but it could also possibly be a Ville de Lyon- group 3, hard prune type. If you could post a picture when it blooms we can help with identification and pruning advice. As for pruning right now, I would leave it alone, since you pruned it last year. The roots are stronger after a year and it should be fine now. Your main concern now is knowing what you have, so that you will know how and when to prune your plant next year for the best bloom. A picture speaks a thousand words, so let us see one when it blooms and we can identify your plant and give easy instructions on pruning and fertilizing. Congrats on getting that tiny seedling through a season without it's dying ! Most of the tiny, packaged, bare root types sold at Lowes only have a 50/50 chance at survival ! Maybe I should fine my spelling teacher for not teaching me how to spell. On the other hand maybe over look a misspelled word and focus more on the subject matter and save the jokes for a rainy day. If you insist on the $10.00 price for each one then you will have to split 1/2 with me because they are my Bagworms. Personally I wouldn't put a fine on them I'll just give them all to you. Dave

Your seedlings are beautiful. I'm sorry to hear about your losses. I have a few shrubs that aren't looking to well this year due to too much rain and will most likely lose them. Fortunately they're common and cheap to replace if I decide to. And one shrub I lost due to the boyfriend not paying any attention, I had a small forsythia and it kind of blended in with the grass (grass is tall because the yard is too wet to mow), and he mowed it over with the mower. I'm waiting to see if it'll come back but not likely. It was given to me by our neighbor. I guess I'm going to have to cut the grass from now on if I don't want anything else killed or damaged, he gets in too much of a hurry to get the mowing done. Karen

You thought yours was old? My bed belonged to my grandparents and my grandma gave it to me (also) in 1978 when I bought my house and had no bed. It's from the early 1900s!

Yes I agree Dawn, it's good your are doing something nice for yourself now.

Kathy, Congrats..this must be exciting for you. I have been the same way **making do**. I have bought some new appliances but even most of them were used. My home is comfy and clean, but it will never be featured in a magazine..this is my life though and it is perfect for me.

Schoolhouse I've had a few sneek peeks of photos of your home...I bet yours could be featured in a mag...my kiind of style for sure.

We're still using our original BR set from 1964. It was a gift from my MIL, but I chose it. The "Mediterranean" look was in style then, but this is a very restrained version. Our MBR has DH's tall chest and the two bedside chests. My triple dresser is in the guest room. (I dress from my walk-in closet.) The original headboard is in storage, replaced by an upholstered one. We're still using the same heavy duty king size springs/mattress frames.

After 16 years here, I really need to replace the headboard and matching roman shades, but I hate decorating decisions!

We bought our current set when we moved into this home, about 24 years ago.

It's nice to make a change in your personal space. Enjoy!

Congrats! Another make-doer here. All of my furniture was used. And paid for daughter's college....what part wasn't covered by scholarships. No loans for her.

Well, I wasn't here when the bed was delivered, I had a Dr. appointment 2 hours away and didn't want to change it. Not happy with everything and DH says, Well, you picked it out. Well yes, I did, but these were things he should have told the guys about. Oh well, I'll be the bad guy!

It really is beautiful, but the smell of the stain/sealer will have me sleeping in the other bedroom for a while.

The lights in the head board doesn't work, there was supposed to be power strips in the head board too. This is what is called a Pier bedroom set, with drawers under the bed and 2 towers on either side. Each tower has a pull out to be used at night as a bedside "table". Well, the one on my side I can barely pull out. There a couple other issues, but I won't go into them. Needless to say I will have to get my B*tch on!!!
