1 year with nothing to do: help!

Hi everyone!

We recently bought a property with a backyard 100% covered wall-to-wall in brick! We're going to pull out 2/3rds of the brick and put in sod and space for a border garden, but we likely can't tackle this project till next year (summer 2018). While I have some container projects planned, there's nothing I can do in the mean time.

My question is this, beyond some decorative and vegetable containers, is it wise to start maturing some plants now? For example, I'd like to plant in my border garden some hostas, smoke bush, eternal summer hydrangra, etc... is there value in growing these in containers until next year? That is to say, to mature them this year so I have larger, more mature plants ready for the following year? (maybe over winter them in the garage or something?)

Any advice is much appreciated!
