adding some new David Austins - please help on selection! :)
Comments (18)I only grow two Austins and one is a dog who despite the fact that his flowers are to die for (all three or four of them in as many years) has a shovel standing right next to him - so the only first hand recommendation I could make would be for Windemere - the color is very delicate, the blooms are lovely, the bush has filled out nicely in the same period of time that the other has languished and she is not stingy - the down side is the blooms seem almost like day lilies in staying power. However there are lots of them coming on all the time to make up for that. In defense of the other rose it is own root and my Windemere is grafted, which should initially make some difference but not as much I would think as I am seeing. I believe the slacker is just a dud - so I don't want to mention his name and cause his brothers to suffer, perhaps undeservedly....See MorePlease share your pretty flower photos here!
Comments (26)Thanks plantloverkat, the bit of clematis breeding work I've done has been fun and rewarding. Yes, that last seedling is rather unique if I do say so myself. I've gotten germinations in as quickly as two months when using warm stratification and generally blooms by the second season, though given a bit of TLC, I've known others to have seedlings produce flowers in their very first year. That first seedling shown had later produced these beauties...See MorePrincess Alexandra of Kent in containers? (Zone 5)
Comments (21)To answer and address some previous questions...The containers I typically use for trialing roses are in pots that are 16" wide and 18" deep. They are the thick, black plastic pots you see at nurseries that they use for small trees. My garage is attached to the house, is unheated and non-insulated with a concrete floor. I place the pots directly onto the concrete floor and do not cover them. They receive snow as insulation and as a way of watering them as things warm. More snow is added as needed. Throughout the years, I have had excellent luck in overwintering roses in this manner in average and typical winters. However, in the past 2 record breaking cold winters up here, I have lost the vast majority of the potted trial roses and other plants including perennials. Hope that helps....See MorePrincess Alexandra of Kent Troubles
Comments (25)It might be a combo of RMV and winter stress. If RMV has weakened your plants, they might be declining each year while struggling to return from cold season dormancy, whereas clean plants would bounce right back each spring. I suspect that if all your plants are Austins grafted on Dr. Huey, they may all be infected with RMV. Some plants with RMV exhibit obvious signs and some don't. Also, some plants with RMV thrive for decades while others fade. Who knows why? As mentioned on another thread, Austin continues to send infected plants to customers by the truckload. (I'm paddling in the same pool of victims.) I'd definitely contact Austin with photos of your virus patterned foliage and declining plants. It's inexcusable that the company still propagates on diseased rootstock. Carol...See MoreThe Constant Gardener (Zone 5, Ontario)
