Converting freestanding range to slide in range later

We're reusing our freestanding range in this remodel, but I may want to put a slide in range at a later date. I know the slide in needs 2" of countertop or a stainless filler at the back. Should I ask to keep remnants from our countertop (Quartz) or is it not possible to fill in this space later? I'll go the stainless filler route then if we get a slide in range. No budget to upgrade now.

Let your fabricators know the specific model of your future range. They can leave you the exact piece you'll need. This isn't a big deal as long as you plan ahead. If you're getting a 4" high splash to match the countertop, I'd run it continuously and let the old range sit a bit proud of the cabinets for a few years. I did this at my neighbor's house. He drives a Tesla but still hasn't gotten the slide in.

Not all slide in need the filler in the back. My Bosch induction slide in is full depth.

The CafÃ© definitely has 2 ovens and comes in either duel fuel or all gas. There is an optional "back guard" which I thought was silly Â but "to each his own" I guess. It also has a long middle burner and comes with a griddle made just for that burner Â not that you canÂt use it for other things. If you could use a second oven but only have room for a 30" unit Â this is definitely something to considerÂ

Cooking on induction absolutely rocks. Immediate response, consistant temps--it's wonderful. I hate to clean, but cleaning up an induction cooktop rocks just as much as cooking on one. Nothing ever burns onto the cooktop, ever. Make a huge mess. Swipe with a soapy rag, swipe again with a clean, dry rag, shiney and clean. Done. Haul hubby out to a different demo. If you can find a Miele or Wolf showroom, go to one of those. Then he can be impressed with the performance but shocked at the price point, and you can "settle" for something much less expensive that works well but with fewer bells and whistles, and he'll be impressed with your research and happy to come in on budget. And you can be a happy cook with a spotless range and very little effort. ;-p Cj

If the reason you're doing this is for enhanced aesthetics, and that's the only reason anyone chooses a slide in over a free standing, then you want to make sure that the decisions you make will actually look right. With laminate counters, unless you replace the counters entirely, it will not look right to have the attached backsplash for the counter and then have it interrupted for tiled section in the middle where the range is (without the laminate backsplash section). It will look like a mistake or afterthought. Considering that you're saying money is too tight to do a backsplash right now, much less a counter top, and that a slide in range costs about double what a free standing range costs, it really doesn't sound as though choosing a slide in would be in your best interests economically. Replace your current range with another free standing one if your range needs replacing due to functionality issues. If you have your heart set on a slide in, then pick up a "new to you" used freestanding one on Craigs List and save your money to be able to do a new range, countertop, and backsplash all at one time. That's the only way to integrate a slide in range successfully into an existing kitchen design.

^ Excellent point. That's why you pick the future range now. The opening and splash may be the same as a freestanding.

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if I can narrow down the options now. I do like my current range, so I may not change it until it breaks. DH wants us to focus on backyard after the remodel, so I don't see changing out the range for a few years.

I think a lot of slide in ranges now come with (or you can get an optional part) a filler strip. Essentially, they're old school freestanding ranges where they have moved the buttons up front and allowed the consumer to add a strip on the back to make it look like a slide in.

There are a lot of these, but they mostly don't need the filler strip since they go back to the wall. The samsungs, for example.

But you are right that most traditional slide-ins that don't go all the way back do offer a metal filler strip for people who don't have a handy piece of countertop to use instead.
