Tiny bird looks like an American Goldfnch.

We are perched right at the foot of the eastern Sierra Nevada foothills at 4600ft between the Carson City airport and the hospital. We see tiny birds. Smallest birds I have ever seen except for a hummingbirds. They look a lot like pictures of he American Goldfinch. Most are more of what I would call slate gray than black. Very active, photos are out of the question. All winter they seem to be eating aphids found on kale. What images should I Google to help with identification?
