bathroom vanity width

I am looking to replace a bathroom vanity which is surrounded by walls on three sides. The distance between the walls is 61", but I have only found vanities that I like which are of shorter width, ie 55". Is there any way to deal with this extra space?

60 is a very common size for double vanities or you can look into having a local cabinet maker commission a custom vanity at the exact measurements you need.

or you can just leave the 2.5 gap between wall and vanity, hard to clean though.

Or have decorative filler added to look like moulding in the gaps

If it's a double sink vanity, you want the full 60", and that's even tight for an alcove. Vanities sold online are mostly meant to be free-standing. There's a couple of ways to go for a wall-to-wall installation, where you don't need decorative side panels. What style of vanity are you interested in?

Thanks for the info. Based on your response I went back and remeasured, and sure enough it isnt one pices, but rather three with a filler. The cabinet maker is XLI (Armstrong). We decided to leave the vanity and just replace the doors and hardware after sanding and re-finishing the face. Thanks Matt

I think it will look fine either way....if it is lower, you have a dedicated/defined area as your makeup vanity. If it is the same height, that space may or may not be used as a vanity and will just become part of the overall sink area. Only you can decide which will work better for you. A counter-height stool COULD look a little strange in your bathroom and is not the norm, but if you like it that's all that matters.

I like free standing. And we did it in our master and our guest bathrooms. With the master, you want enough room to reach back there and clean. Also, that might be where you are tucking in the wastebasket. I would center it if possible. For a few reasons, our is off center. But I made sure to leave enough room in the left for reasons I mentioned.
