cost of tile vs solid shower surround
Comments (12)I think tile can be quite beautiful. But for ease of maintenance we went with cultured granite surrounds (already had a Corian granite-look sink vanity) and for the shower, a cultured granite showerpan. Contractors used cement board. Due to high labor costs in our area going with Swanstone or CG worked out to be cheaper than a professional tile installation. With CG the cost included installation, no small matter. It took three strong men to move in a 38" custom neo-angle pan! We considered Swanstone - we have Swanstone kitchen countertops and sink - but they did not do custom sizes, so we went with the CG which looks similar. Most people, even contractors, think it's Corian. It's very slightly shinier than Corian due to the gelcoat. My spouse loathes tile. If we bought a house with a tiled shower surround the first thing we would do is rip it out; he will not tolerate it in bathrooms or kitchens (he went to hotel & restaurant mgmt school so he's big on the whole non-porous idea). We have had the CG surrounds for 13 yrs and they are almost effortless to maintain. We don't even have to squeegee it. Just spray after use, maybe 2x/yr I run a wet sponge over the walls before I exit. Still look brand-new, too. Recently my spouse remarked it was the best of all the changes we've made to our home in the 25 yrs we've been here....See MoreShower pan/wall design dilemma
Comments (25)pattn1.. The pan in the photo probably has flanges on two sides. Pans are available with one or more thresholds. For example, MTI Baths makes acrylic pans that can be specified for 1,2or 3 flanges. Here’s one that I’m considering: https://mtibaths.com/assets/product-specs-2018/MTSB-4236MT.pdf Refer to the section on Construction features ar the bottom of the spec sheet. It says, “Factory-installed tile flange on 1, 2 or 3 sides to facilitate installation. PLEASE SPECIFY WHICH SIDES WHEN ORDERING.” It’s not inexpensive, but quality seems to be better than other brands. I’ve also looked at soapstone and quartz pans. They don’t have flanges at all and I don’t know how the walls are constructed to prevent leaks. Maybe one of the pros will chime in....See Moresticker shock--and opinions are wall art--photography vs painting
Comments (25)What do I think of the actual horse photo? Since the quality of the work cannot be assessed from an online photo, that will not enter into it. Perhaps it does for others but for me it won't. The content of the actual photo is disturbing to me as it is a photo of feral horses who live out their days as wild animals and I cannot romanticize that. Anyone who has owned horses, as I have, will know that horses often require care and intervention for problems. These wild horses do not have that so it's survival of the fittest. Of course this is the same for any wild animals but should not be forgotten. I looked at the photographer's website and saw pics of wild stallions fighting. The results of this are bite or hoof wounds to both animals. Wild mares will foal without assistance and if there are problems there will be suffering and perhaps death for both the mare and the unfortunate foal. These horses are not treated for parasites and while that may not be a large problem in a wild horse population it may cause problems. I know many people do not want to think about such problems as they do not want anything to get in the way of their appreciation of 'art' but I prefer the art on my walls to not depict something I dislike even thinking about as I cannot do anything about it. I have a collection (more than a dozen) of original landscape oil paintings some of which we bought in Europe decades ago and paid less than $1000. for the most expensive. Other paintings I've bought in yard sales for next to nothing. Some of these paintings are amateurish but still have a quality I like. Others are IMO quite well done and likely cost the original purchaser much more than the few dollars I paid. Neither the price nor the artistic 'quality' enters into my appreciation of the art. The fact that someone spent hours or days painting a picture of a scene they enjoyed is more important and I enjoy the fruits of their labor. Art is very personal and I don't think has to cost $12,000. to be valuable. There are many photographers who take pics of horses, if you search and compare prices you will perhaps find something less expensive you will like as much. I like your idea of taking pics of images to spell your last name. That's a very meaningful type of art IMO....See MoreHeated floor causing shock from shower fixture
Comments (11)Yes I agree with you the mat must be leaking current in order to produce this effect. Unfortunately the cost of materials is so low compared to the cost of installation. I imagine if we go further with the troubleshooting we will reach a point where it's impossible to prove whether the mat is defective or if it was damaged from install, without ripping the whole thing out. The contractor was present when mat was installed and claims it was not damaged. The manufacturer is unlikely to warranty anything without proof of that which would presumably entail removing the floor. So that would mean we'd be paying a lot more for labor to have the issue diagnosed. I think we want the contractor to finish the kitchen work (install sink, DW hookup and backsplash) and then we'll have them cap off the system and abandon it. It's on its own breaker so it's not a risk right now. I will not expect to be charged for the install, I can return the thermostat and I'll be out $200 for the mat itself worst case scenario. If I need to get an electrician in there to separately confirm that it's most likely an install issue (ie if contractor charges me for install), I will. There were no extra leads, the mat came with the wires attached. We turned on the floor about 7 days after install when we moved back in, no one instructed us otherwise. I did see in the instructions online later to wait 28 days. I figured that is to allow mortar to set avoid cracking etc, but I didn't see that info until I watched the video after getting the shock. Lesson learned, if you want something like heated floor get an installer who has experience with the product....See Morehousequester
