Does Anyone Grows Romantica Roses in Cal?
Comments (16)The Romanticas do well for me here on the So. Calif coast. I grow Jardins de Bagatelle, Peter Mayle, Yves Piaget, Eden, Comtesse de Provence, Johann Strauss, Jean Giono. I'd say most are pretty darned disease-free, except for Jardins de Bagatelle, which seems prone to rust. My Comtesse has issues with its blooms... they tend to fry quickly and sometimes smell slightly of vinegar. Odd, since it's next to Yves, who has long-lasting blooms. Yves will ball if it is rainy as it's opening. My Eden is on the north side of a six foot tall wood fence, conditions which should promote rust at certain times of the year, and it has never had rust (and I'm in rust central). I ditched Abbaye de Cluny a number of years ago b/c I thought it was a lesser version of Just Joey, which I like a lot better. The only one I gave away recently was Rouge Royale, for the reasons folks mentioned above. The person who I gave it to is happy with its occasional great blooms. John, I did not find Yves to be difficult to propagate... I made several cuttings of it a number of years ago. Romanticas are really just HTs. Susan...See MoreJohn Cabot as a climber
Comments (13)Janepa-I planted one climber on each side of the trellis. We pass thru this arch constantly to the garden and it faces the street so he requires frequent trimbacks in spring and after bloom. I can't worry about "weaving" the shoots laterally or trimming off possible potential flowers.(Tough love) I tie selected new branches with twine(upwards to cover arch and along sides to cover frame of trellis). He goes into winter neatly-like now, with attention to "scragglers" that want to branch out. I carry "nippers" frequently and use them to keep him from getting messy. I have a small ladder to access the top 1 or 2x a summer. He comes back full of blooms springtime inspite of frequent "haircuts". As Karl bapst rosenut says JC is vigorous and will keep you busy.(!) But I love him. I prefer a heavy, strong grower after losing my first 2 choices in this spot. He is 4 yrs old....See More'Strike it Rich'- Does anyone grow this rose?
Comments (27)I'm incredibly late on this topic, but here's my take: I'm in my second year growing this rose in a pot, and it's probably the most eye catching rose I have. The deep bright gold contrasts the darker green foliage and red new growth beautifully. I pruned mine back pretty hard this year and it's just now blooming. It's got a small problem with blackspot and I've had to remove a lot of the foliage from the bottom of the rose, but up top it's filling out nicely. The fragrance is my biggest disappointment because I try to only grow roses with a fragrance. The advertised fragrance is a big reason I purchased this rose, yet I can't smell anything from any of the blossoms. I don't know why that is. Maybe it needs more time? Other than that, I love everything about this rose! As a side note, I grew the sport of this rose, Ch-Ching last year and all of those blossoms had a strong fragrance. Both are growing on Dr. Huey....See MorePolish Spirit growing on Cl. John Cabot
Comments (2)Clematis take 3-5 years to become established. The plant is developing a strong root system now, so most of the growth is underground. Polish spirit gets huge. In a couple of years it will probably smother your rose and you will be wishing it was small again. I had to move mine this spring as it completely covered a 14 x 14 eldeberry and the branches were breaking under the weight of the vine. This year my Polish spirit only got 3' tall and just a few flowers. I disturbed the roots so it is starting all over again. I moved it to a large concrete light pole, and I know in a few years it will cover it completely....See Morecaflowerluver
