Where did you get your faucets and such

We've always done all our construction ourselves. We're getting older and just don't want to do it anymore so we've hired a contractor for this remodel. When we got the bid back on the faucets, toilets, tub and such it was over $10,000. That's for a master bathroom, a new toilet for powder room and a kitchen sink and faucet. I know I picked a couple of expensive faucets, but I thought that was a bit much. So my question is, where did you all get your fixtures. I know we need to change a couple of things to something a bit less expensive, but I'm hoping to save some money by purchasing them ourselves.

I have bought every new light fixture, faucet, sink,drain assembly, shower trim, valve body etc. for this house online over the last 5 years or so. Some at Amazon, others through build.com, e faucets, faucet direct etc. Never a problem.

We are getting too old to do it all ourselves also but I hire my own sub contractors for the more extensive parts of the project or things DH no longer cares to fiddle with. I know exactly what I want and have gathered everything ahead of time. I have a plumber, an electrician, a framer and a drywall guy. I network all the time to find people who do good work. I find a lot of good trades people by getting referrals from the people who have done good work in other areas. For example I was very pleased with a relatively small drywall job. I asked the drywall person if he knew a framing carpenter who did quality work taking the same extra care he did. That way even though we can't do it all ourselves we retain control of the projects.

Normally I would not bash people or a company online, but I recently conducted some business with a firmed called KBAuthority (aka KBA) out of Brooklyn, N.Y. Had the lowest prices of anyone. Somehow I let my guard down and went with them. Big MISTAKE!!! Please don't use them! Read the reviews and don't let the too good to be true prices fool you. My contempt for them now runs very deep.

However, I find that Build.com is a pretty good source for a good selection of items. And I find their customer service is excellent. If you find a price lower they will match it. Also sign up to get the "contractor" discount.

Used/antique Iranian rugs on ebay. A real bargain bin, if your eye can sort through the real garbage. This one was about $300 with freight. Odd-size rugs like this one are bigger bargains, this is 5x11. Casey

Where did you get your down comforter recently?

Weight isn't always the decision to buy. The amount of true "down" is what will determine warmth and weight. Plus the cover material. I bought two down comforters 15 years ago and they are still in great condition. Couldn't find them to buy another until recently, but they are called FairyDown from the UK. You can get them online now and still at a very good price. I also bought a sheep wool mattress cover, they are wonderful to sleep on. With this company you will know also where the down came from.

I got mine from all different sources. BULL'S EYE came from Edmunds. EYES FOR YOU I got from Burlington Roses. EYES ON ME came from Lowes. EYECONIC MELON LEMONADE from Regans. They carry all the "Eyeconic" series ones. And got my BLUE FOR YOU from Cliff back when he first opened EuroDesert Roses. Not sure who has BFY anymore tho. Disease resistance is generally pretty good on all of them, but this yr has been such a weird, wet and cold one that they all have been hit with black spot.

Costco. I got hansgrohe for kitchen and bathroom a couple of years ago. They've been great so far.

How can you sign up for builder discount? Do I have to get the license number from the builder?

We purchased all of our plumping fixtures from faucetdirect.com aka build.com for our kitchen remodel (2 sinks/faucets) and 3 bathrooms (sinks, toilets, showers, tubs) and were very happy with the pricing and customer service through multiple orders over the course of a few years.

@Dream, there is no special stuff you need to do with Build.com. Just sign up online or give them a call. They basically give just a small discount for getting emails and offers. I find their emails tolerable unlike many web retailers who bombard you all the time.

We researched faucet brands (within our budget) and specs first, and found both Home Depot and the above mentioned sites carried what we wanted. Even though the online sites charged $10 less, we knew a return would be much easier with HD (just a quick trip to our local store) if there were any issues.

Build.com is owned by Ferguson who operates retail showrooms across the country. I think inventory for build.com, faucetdirect.com, and ferguson.com are all shared.

I'd also encourage you to look at a local distributor. Some are expensive and out of touch with the times but others are very competitive. I don't mind paying a little more to support a local business if they have a large floor display area so I can see and touch what I'm buying before committing.

I just did my bathroom and got al my plumbing supply's from this really great place called Green Art Plumbing in Long Island NY. It's family owned and has great prices and products

I primarily used FaucetDirect.com. (I used Galaxy Tool Supply for my cleanup sink, but they're no longer in business - probably b/c they weren't charging enough for their merchandise - they had really great prices!)

[BTW...Faucet Direct is part of the Build.com family]

@Buehl, by chance do you know what location Galaxy operated out of? The reason I ask is that your mention of the low prices had me curious. I did a search and found that company sounded very similar to the one out of Brooklyn (KBA) that I mentioned above. I am glad you got a good sink with Galaxy, but in the other reviews this now defunct company sounded terrible. I am wondering if they re-invented themselves as KBA.

I really like Build.com, but cannot emphasize my disdain for KBA enough. Simply stated, they are crooks.
