Sudden death of Knock Outs

altorama Ray

I am asking this for a friend who lives in KY. He planted two rows of Knock Outs, one in his front yard and one on the other side of the sidewalk. They were fine for 4 years until the ones in his front yard got sick and quickly died one after the other. It started with drooping blooms and died down from there. The foliage was normal but turned brown as it was dying. The ones that died were not next to each other. He pulled them out, roots had no feeder roots. He replaced them and they all died in the same manner within two weeks. He did not use fertilizer, the clematis in front of the roses are still going strong. Soil analysis showed no abnormalities. He now has Hydrangeas in their place and they are very healthy. The roses on the other side of the sidewalk are still flourishing. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused such a sudden death? Thank you
