Freezing Tomatoes - prep before hand
Comments (7)I know that in actuality it's not a lot more work to chop them after you thaw them, but I know I'd be more likely to use them if they were already ready to go. I've got three young kids and it sure helps to have something I can just grab and toss in a pot. Perhaps it's a mental advantage over a true time-saver. I guess another advantage to doing the peeling, chopping, draining beforehand would be that the tomatoes will be less watery in the dish (I think), and they would take up less space in the freezer. As far as measuring, I make my own chicken broth and freeze it in cubes, so I'm fairly familiar with how many cubes I need to make a cup, etc... To be honest, I have not tried the plain tomatoes I canned yet. So for all I know, they could be fabulous. However, the tomato sauce recipe I tried (from the Ball book) was too sour for me, and the salsa recipe I tried tasted like spicy pickle relish (the Fiesta Salsa recipe - it used cider vinegar). I also made some pickles that were so vinegary I couldn't even stand to smell them. I'm kind of thinking that maybe I'm just overly sensitive to vinegar, although the sauce I made used bottled lemon juice instead and it was still too sour. To answer your question, yes, I think the tomatoes I grow tend to be on the acidic side, but I like them that way fresh... Anyhow, maybe if I kept trying I could find a recipe I like, but canning takes a lot of time and uses a lot of harvest, to wind up with something I can't stand. So for whatever the reason, I think I'm done with it....See MoreMaking 'baloon' type Roman Shades. MUST I hand-stitch?
Comments (3)I have made similar balloon shades more than once. I have used the ring tape and just the rings. Yes, I believe you sew through BOTH layers. If I were doing them again, I think I would choose hand sewing the rings. But either method will work. Good luck!...See MoreFinal layout before handing over to cabinet maker tomorrow
Comments (28)Yes, that's a pullout faucet, the Kohler Fairfax pullout in brushed nickel. The sink is the Kohler sink Owls4Me linked (but I paid about $150 less for it at EXPO last year). I wanted a pullout faucet b/c I wanted a lower profile than a pulldown because: (1) there's a cabinet above part of the sink, (2) there's seating & I wanted to reduce splashing, and (3) I didn't want it to be a "focal point" on the peninsula. It turns out it's much better for filling pots & fish buckets. I just put the pot or bucket on the counter, hook the faucet head on the edge of the pot/bucket, and let it fill. The fish bucket in particular gets too heavy (5 gallons) to lift up out of the sink and then down. I'd rather just slide it off the counter and down. The sink base is a 36" corner sink base...even stock cabinet lines have them. It wasn't a special order cabinet. If he's charging you more for the angle, then I assume he would do the same for any corner cabinet w/the angle instead of the 90o cut (like a lazy susan cabinet)? I can't imagine it would cost that much more....unless he doesn't want to do it and this is his way of discouraging you... As a matter of fact, I'd think the sink base would cost less than a lazy susan cabinet since it doesn't need the curved wall to surround the shelves and it doesn't need the hardware for inside. ++++++++++ Space to open a refrigerator b/w the end of the peninsula and the refrigerator...what a luxury! LOL! I have 33" b/w mine. It was supposed to be 42", which I think is probably plenty, but due to the infamous measuring errors + outside venting issues, I ended up w/33". Yes, it's enough room to open & stand in front of (and nice & close for staging groceries for putting in the refrigerator!), but no one can easily pass by while the refrigerator is open. Luckily, the refrigerator is one appliance that's not open for very long. Getting to the point...5' is more than enough...if you want more peninsula length, you could decrease the aisle to 48" and still allow someone to pass by....See MoreOpinions before I make a move (job related)
Comments (25)LOL She's off on sick leave Flamey and believe it or not, her replacement is worse than she is! The new chick takes all morning to make 18 sack lunches, leaves to deliver meals (six of them) at ten to eleven and doesn't return until quarter past twelve and after the in-house patrons have been served. Then she takes a smoke break until the seniors leave. Then she has her dinner. Then she takes another smoke break. Then she can't do clean up because bleach makes her hands break out and she's allergic to rubber gloves so she sweeps, half of the floor but not under the tables. Then she takes a smoke break. Then she drags the garbage sacks across the ground to the dumpster, breaking them open and scattering garbage all over and leaves it. Then she takes a smoke break. A freezer went out last week and she couldn't help load meat (to transport to another freezer at the store) because she doesn't have enough wind to do anything. It's appalling. It's embarrassing. If anyone says anything to her about her work (like in 'tie your hair back' or 'cut your fingernails' or 'put gloves on when you handle food' or 'don't flick your cigarette butts on the Church lawn next door') she gets all wide eyed and says 'well W_____ (the old boss) says it's okay if I do this!'. *Lori pulling her hair out and it isn't pretty* The patrons complain to me about her. When I relay the complaints to the old director she gets mad and says I don't like the new girl and haven't given her a chance. This is not true. I just don't feel sorry for her. LOL The poor woman has no clue how to work. What's worse, she doesn't want to learn how to work. The new director is very displeased with the work ethic too. I REALLY ticked the old boss off when, after I served twenty people on my own while this chick was of doing god knows what, said I'd rather have the old lazy woman back. LOL One of of patrons in the meals on wheels program is 80 years old, dependent on oxygen but very friendly. He thinks every woman is beautiful and likes to hold your hand or pat you butt. When this happens I smile nicely, say 'thank you' to his compliment and stay out of his reach. Well...the new woman has been sitting down and flirting with this guy, spending as much as a half an hour in his house, alone with him. Then she gave him her home phone number. THEN she complained that he was getting too familiar with her and she was afraid of him. WTF? The old director got all upset with him and told me I would probably have to start delivering a meal to him because, well, it just upset the new woman soooooo much to which I said 'I don't think so..does the commissioners know about this?' so instead of telling this woman (who is thirty years old with three children) to 'just stay out of his way' she goes and has a 'talk' with the old guy. Of course he became indignant, complained to every other old folk in the county and got the old director in trouble when word got back to the commissioners. LOL She maintains nobody understands the new woman and that she just needs to be helped a lot, that's all. change is so interesting. lori...See Morecmm1964
