Mythical critters we'd love to see in our rose gardens
Comments (44)Ha, Jim! Looks like you captured a photo of the elusive Grouchodeer! Beneficial to the garden because they drop cigar ash around the beds but dangerous because they don't look where they're stepping while they wiggle their eyebrows milking the audience for laughs. Just wait till his brothers start showing up - hoo boy, that's A Day at the Races. Diane, I was thinking your badgers did sound might useful at chasing away the mice (I'm fine if the coyotes finish the mice off), but the "super at digging" part sounds suspiciously fraught with danger. I can imagine a badger uprooting an established rose because some fool gopher snuck in there for protection. I imagine you don't let small dogs or cats out into the garden at night either, for fear the same fate awaits them. You have quite the Wild Life out there. Comments (35)Thanks Patty and Rebecca. Dynatrap! Dang that auto-correct!! I did search on Amazon but couldn't find one that had the amount of blue like yours does. I wonder if it makes a difference? I think other commenters thought that the blue would attract thrips and midges-then Zap!! A bit pricey when there are roses to buy ;-) but worth it. We have dogs and heart worm is very prevalent here. Actually two of our past dogs were diagnosed and treated for it. Plus we have Eastern Equine Encephalitis here to worry about as well as West Nile Virus. And now a new deer tick illness that has killed, I believe, 8 people in Massachusetts. And we thought lyme disease was bad enough. Some of the beneficial nematodes, Nemaseek being one, list ticks as a target insect so I'll be purchasing some in the spring since I read summersrythm's post that said they need over 45 temps to survive. mad- So the little suckers don't drown? I would think the eggs would be encapsulated somehow though to protect against drowning like a chicken egg. Would the go into a kind of suspended animation and not hatch until the conditions are favorable? There's just so little info available on detailed rose midge life cycle. How do you handle new spring rose purchases? No killing frosts at that point. Would a quarantine work? If so, for how long to break the cycle? Do rose midge breed and reproduce from spring through frost? And I thought the monthlong assault of Japanese beetles was bad enough. sharon...See MoreOh, no! More problems... Is this rose midge?
Comments (15)Vesfl, Going by the further information you provided it is sounding more like midge fly damage, especially with how extensive it is. It's very unlikely RRV hit all your roses at once, but midge fly certainly does. Still, keep a lookout at any RRV looking growth/foliage. Imidacloprid is the systemic midge maggot killer. My niece whose husband is an organic food proponent, caused her to resist using the Bayer product with imidacloprid, and opted for Monterey Garden Insect Spray with spinosad. Either she did not apply it correctly or its effectiveness is poor for midge fly control, I do not know. I cannot truthfully recommend it. I do know that the Bayer, imidacloprid does work for me the way I spray it, so so I will stick with it, and recommend it. Moses....See MoreWhat do YOU do about Rose Midge Fly infestation?
Comments (10)I had huge infestation of Rose Midge in my garden in 2020 and part of 2021. I was loosing all blooms and new basal canes after spring flush on Summer Romance (One of the favorites of RM), Jude, Lady Of shallot, Oklahoma, Double Delight, Golden celebration, Fragrant Cloud , Tropicana, Charlotte. After researching for natural treatments, tried planting salvia, cat mint, flowering tobacco. Also added bug zapper in the back yard (Solar one from COSTCO and also power connected one for whole backyard) but that didn't help much. So finally tried dinotefuran soil drench last year and that broke the cycle and this year there are no rose midges in my garden. Instead of safari 20 SG, I purchased Alpine WSG on amazon that has double concentration. One 10gm packet in 3 gallons of water for soil drench around the base of rose plant. It gets absorbed by rose in single day which is far better than imidacloprid that takes 2-3 weeks to get absorbed. It took 1-2 applications per rose last year to break the life cycle of RMs. Well worth the effort to finally see roses blooming again and not loosing the basal canes to RMs....See Moretotoro z7b Md
