Got my Hortico order

It was actually two orders combined... 19 roses in all. They look good and are soaking now. Nice thing... a few of them were 1.5 grade so they knocked off like $6 apiece. Still decent plants. Only problem is one may be another of their mis-ID'd varieties. I ordered what they listed as the 1983 HT from Cants, GOLDSTAR, a lovely yellow with a white-ish edge and beautiful form. Well, the plant label says "Climbing Gold Star" which is apparently the Tantau shrub/climber version. If that's the case, that's cool. I sorta wanted some more climbers for along the veggie pen fence area. But... I was pretty stoked about that GOLDSTAR rose. It looks quite beautiful. The invoice they sent shows yet another name for the rose... GOLDEN STAR (HT), and there are two roses with that name. I just emailed Nicole to find out if she can tell me which one I am actually going to end up having. My guess is it'll be the climber since that's what's on the label. And it's not a typical Hortico tag. I'm wondering if they got some of these roses from another supplier and didn't actually grow them. In fact, I noticed one of the roses, LIBERTY BELL, has wax on the canes, and their own roses never have wax on them!

They also sent me replacements for two roses that I got last yr that were also mis-ID'd. I ordered the J&P apricot MONET (GRAND IMPRESSION), but I received the lavender MONET. Also ordered Fryer's ROTARY SUNRISE, an apricot/yellow blend, but it ended up being a pure red... possibly ROTARY ROSE or ROTER STERN. Unfortunately, they have a habit of listing the wrong version of a rose with the same or similar name. I hope my replacements are the correct roses this time!!

Woooohoooo. I received mine Wednesday. All of mine were labeled correctly. Out of your list I only got Moody Blue. A few others were Frederic Mistral, Louisa Stone and now I've went brain dead. I left the tags on but didn't keep my invoice. Oh Charles Austin and Coral Dawn climbers is another. Can't wait to see them bloom. Judy

Beth - I received my Hortico order yesterday, also. Frederic Mistral, Alec's Red and Peter Mayle. They look healthy, but compared to Palatine, big difference. Mine looked like it had been opened too, but they were well packed. I was wondering how much difference overall the plant size makes? I was expecting them to be on the small side, so that wasn't a surprise. However, the International fees I was charged totaled around $14.00, they were less than a $1.00 each on Palatine and Pickering orders.

Hortico is near Burlington, Ontario, near the RBG, a relatively warm part that gets better snow cover because it's west of the lake. Pickering which is in a colder area, much like my garden, also carries Noisettes. The canes don't need to survive over winter. Whatever they produce only needs to be crown hardy. The past three winters have been relatively mild. In past years Pickering used to carry a couple of tea roses, Duchesse de Brabant & Maman Cochet, which they say they dropped due to lack of demand. They had them listed among their HTs.

If you do not have high blood pressure, I'd say go ahead and take a chance. A few years ago I ordered a dozen or so different types of roses from Hortico, and when it came past the time that I expected the roses to arrive, I called Hortico, and they said they had sold out of most of them. What kind of company does not set aside merchandize once it has been ordered? It boggles my mind. Still, if I had to have 2 roses that were not to be found elsewhere this year, I would take a chance and order those two from Hortico, with the understanding, from experience, there might possibly be a 50% chance that they'd be unavailable after I ordered them. Breathe deep, order roses, breathe deep.... Lux.

I agree with Lilyfinch that Hortico roses are much smaller plants than what you expect for grafted plants. I placed an order for 3 roses from Hortico last spring. Although they were small, they were extremely vigorous! I have gotten more flowers from the Moonstone grafted on multiflora from Hortico in one growing season than the Moonstone grafted on Dr. Heuy from Edmunds in the last 3 years that I have had it. Savoy Hotel on multiflora also bloomed profusely! I was pleasantly surprised and very happy with my roses from Hortico.

Bethnorcal...Gold Star or Golstern ,is a Kordesii shrub ( which with no prune cane take off ) but can be kept as a 5 foot bush with hard pruning. Plus you get more blooms for your buck. I ordered both so I too will check with Nicole to make sure I don't get two of the same.

My Goldstern

Rotary Sunrise is a fav of mine I have three. It is a soft colouring of Tequila Sunrise.

Dizzy Heights can also be kept shorter like a tall shrub. I kept it to 7 feet in my garden.

Parade another of Boerner's Kordes like fragrant climbers. This one does do well in part shade.

Parade in semi shade

I have tried Good Life three times but this is a rose that will be happier in your area than mine. I now have three wimpy 2 canes. This year I will pour the liquid fertilizer on them. I think this is one of the best pure orange rose HTs.

GOLD STAR looks nice. It'll do well in the veggie pen next to JACOB'S ROBE. DIZZY HEIGHTS looks lovely. Seven ft would be ok. The fence is like 7.5-8ft. PARADE is going out at the arbor that's at the front of the house. I had PINK DON JUANs on both sides, but one of them died. So I thought PARADE would do well on the other side now. I had ROTARY SUNRISE before. Didn't do very well tho, and died in the septic dig-up. I just hope it will be the correct rose this time!! Been thinking about ordering GOOD LIFE for sometime. I hope it does well.

Beth, my Liberty Bell was also covered in wax, which I wouldn't have noticed without your comment. I really hope it's the Kordes HT, and not Benardella's mini-flora. Out of this order I'm most excited to see blooms from Cressida, Albrighton, Golden Scepter, Liberty Bell, & Marina.

I just planted all the bare root roses from Hortico (spring order) in the garden today! Tomorrow will plant the ones from Dec, it was too cold in Dec, I potted them up and grew them in the basement under the lights, now it's time for them to go the garden. These are the ones I planted today, I can't wait to see their blooms! :-)

Benaminh, I don't think that LIBERTY BELL is going to be the Benardella mini. Mine is a big fat-caned plant. Too thick to be a mini. I just hope it is what it's purported to be tho. I almost ordered MARINA. Haven't seen that one around for a long time. I just have sooo many oranges. I'll be anxious to see yours blooming.
