Placed first Vintage Gardens order
Comments (19)Try Countryside. She has very nice roses, her prices are good and she's a lot closer. And she needs support, too. I'm all the way east and I use Vintage for what no one closer has (which is a lot) and also when they have heart-rending sales of roses that need to be saved. And tho they are packed like sardines, every rose I've ever bought from them has arrived in excellent condition. I bought only 8 from VG's spring sale because Sherando is going out of business and I told Randy I'd take what's left at the end, which will probably be species, ramblers and one-time bloomers. He is just south of Charlottesville and he might be worth a drive to you, redsox....See MoreAnother Dissatisfied Hortico Order
Comments (24)A lot of years ago, I actually called J&P looking for a yellow moss HT they'd offered in their catalog some years before. The customer service lady was gracious and very helpful. She offered they sometimes had left over product that would be canned and either sold wholesale or offered for special requests such as mine. She found and supplied the rose I asked for and I received a beautiful, viable bare root a short time later that was properly identified. The original Edmunds was the only other larger producer I know of who actually had such service. Of course, Week's and Star shouldn't be expected to offer such service as they have only been wholesale. They both do/did a great job of advertising their products to drive business through their customers. The specialty sources do and have done, just what you ask for. I have often received inquiries from a number of them asking if I knew where to obtain something special for customer requests. They realize their existence depends upon your satisfaction and I can think of only one who still exists who hasn't routinely sought to improve problems when they've been identified, presuming the problem has been within their control. "WE" aren't responsible for more than a very small percent of the annual rose product sale. "WE" are a small "fringe group" in the grand scheme of who buys the many millions of roses produced each year, and though important to the survival of the specialty sources, don't count for much when you consider the sales of companies such as J&P, Week's, Star, Hortico or any of the other larger producers who supply retail outlets. If we were, you wouldn't find the bare roots dumped at discount outlets as has been the case for the past several years. Home Depot and Lowe's wouldn't be able to profitably dump the one, two and three gallon pushed culls in bud and bloom for $3 and up every spring and summer. There would be little to no market for the dried out bare roots on store shelves, and the likes of J&P, Week's and many of the good specialty sources we have lost and are about to lose, would still be strong and viable. Comments (16)So exciting to hear that you all grow some of these! I was worried when I was placing my orders :) Wonderful picture, Avedon! Hopefully my South Seas looks that good in a couple of years. Sounds/looks like that ones a good one! Sarah, I'll be sure to plant Roses in Snow on the side of my house just in case its not happy hear neither. I started planting today, but it was too hot and humid. I'm on vacation this week, so I'll slowly get them done over the next few days :) Flowergardener...you're right! I just checked her auctions on The Lily Auction, and those are some GREAT prices! I might snatch up one of the smaller boxes. By the time they arrive, I should have all the ones above planted! Tammy...See MoreSource for sapodilla? First PI order placed!
Comments (8)Dan: I'll be very interested to hear how the Redland White Sapote tastes when it is container grown. Here's my experience with that cultivar as was posted by me in another thread sometime ago: With regard to the Redland white sapote, when I first tried it, Chris Rollins at the Fruit and Spice Park was calling it "Not SES 1". Obviously, alluding to originally thinking it was SES 1 and learning later that it was very different. Anyway, I tried the fruit and thought it was great. It was soft ball sized and very creamy and sweet without any bitter after taste. I took budwood and grafted it at home. That was 15 years ago and I now have a 20 foot tree that blooms regularly, set fruits sporadically and matures fruit infrequently. And, when the fruit has matured, it always has a strong bitter after taste. I don't know why this is. Perhaps it has something to do with the soil conditions or the rootstock. I posed this issue on Yahoo Rarefruit and the best anyone could tell me was to mulch heavily and consider some minor elements. I recently had to hack the tree back considerably since it was blocking TV reception. I will give it one more year to show me something worth while or it will be time for the White Sapote Chain Saw Masacre. Good luck growing yours! Harry...See Morevesfl (zone 5b/6a, Western NY)
