John F. Kennedy?
Comments (30)Susan4952, don't give up on JFK. I had tried JFK twice several years ago but gave up trying to grow it. However, I decided to give it another chance and I'm glad I did. Mine bloomed like crazy last year, it made the Blue Girl jealous with its strong fragrance. However, I thought I had lost mine because it and Sundowner were really slow to leaf out. You might want to try a different location. Also, I use worm casting as a fertilizer and my roses really seem to like it. I love garden party too but it didn't survive the winter. Will probably give it another chance when there is an opening....See MoreMore late bloomers in VA
Comments (8)Debra and Rita, RE: OLFACTORY EVIDENCE - yes, it is very fragrant. Usually I can't detect fragrance except on some of the real oldies like CITRINA or HYPERION, but this one I can smell! And Rita, the petals are usually fuller than in today's picture of the first bloom. It is not registered as a spider or UF, just a big open formed flower. You would like it as a season extender, I think. DR. CHARLES MOLANO does remind me of PEACH MAGNOLIA ( one of its parents is from Joiner breeding, VANILLA FLUFF) but IMHO, it is far superior - the scapes are sturdier, taller, blooms are bigger and fuller than PEACH MAGNOLIA. I grow both of these in the same bed, so it is easy to compare them....See MoreSome late bloomers and friends
Comments (12)I'm not really sure about disease resistance yet, it was very healthy the first year (two years ago, a warm and dry summer) but last year was much cooler and wetter and it got rust pretty badly. I don't remember a lot of blackspot though... This year has been kind of cold and rainy but not as bad as last year, and so far the leaves are all healthy and green. Mine also gets the minimum amount of sun required, if it were planted in a sunnier spot it would probably be less prone to disease....See MoreWhy don't my John F Kennedy roses have a smell?
Comments (7)There are many rose out there that just don't have any fragrance. At the time that a lot of these roses were bred fragrance wasn't a consideration. They were breeding for that beautiful classic high centered, spiraled, hybrid tea form and not much else. Things like disease resistance, hardiness and fragrance weren't high on the priority list. More recently breeders have been trying to bring back all these qualities but it's a slow process. And you'll note that a lot of the newer HTs don't have that form but are more decorative shaped to the lament of many an exhibitor....See Moresummersrhythm_z6a
