Handscraped hardwood -- will it become dated?
Comments (39)What ever you do DO NOT buy your hand-scrapped floors from Lumber Liquidators! THEY ARE A JOKE! I bought their hand scrapped made by Virginia Mills. Sounds real American huh! Wrong. totally cheap chinese crap that started to flake after just two weeks after installation. I contacted the company and the first thing they asked me was if I WASHED the floor . I told then yes. They then asked me what product I used. I told them either Murphy's Oil Soap of Bon Jovi wood floor cleaner. They told me I shouldn't WASH THE FLOOR PERIOD! They then sent a rep over with a "moisture" reading probe who told me my house was had to much moisture in it. I then had another professional come in (from a company similar to Serve Pro) who took measurements and said they were fine. I then got a letter in the mail from them stating that since I had put moisture (water) on the floor it VOIDED THE WARRANTY! The letter went on to say that I really should not even do more than just a very slightly damp mopping at most using no chemical! But because I had already washed the floor my 30 year warranty was voided! THIS COMPANY AND IT's PRODUCTS ARE A JOKE! STAY AWAY FROM THEM. What's sad is that I uploaded pictures of my new flaking floor and gave them a "one star" on their comment section of their website; sure enough, they took it down before the day was up, this way they only had 4 & 5 star comments from their customers! STAY AWAY FROM LUMBER LIQUIDATORS!...See MorePicking granite that isn't/won't become dated
Comments (44)I am a fabricator. I have been following this thread with interest and find it contains a lot of disinformation and skewed perspectives. Over half my business is high end homes where money is often not a consideration and interior designers are common. Natural stone is still the preferred material for the majority of the work we do even though we provide a wide variety of engineered surfaces includes the various quarts brands and the new materials like Dekton. The quartz products are rapidly losing the panache they enjoyed for years as the new alternative to natural stone. This change has been exacerbated by the emergence of discount brands and discounting among the big suppliers as they fight for market share. Granite has changed in that "exotics" are much more prevalent and alternative finishes to the traditional polish are increasingly common. The buying public has also become more educated and recognizes the actual maintenance for natural stone is minimal unless the material is one of the alternates like marble or travertine which have inferior material properties. My advice to my customers is always to pick the "look" they want and make sure they understand the material properties. Marble is extraordinarily beautiful but it is only a little harder than jello, wicks up liquids like a sponge, and dissolves readily in common organic acids like acetic acid....See MoreWhen does "dated" become classic?
Comments (32)It's funny, 40 - 50 years ago, when I was younger, homes in my area were ripping out marble tiles, mantels and cabinet tops because they looked so old fashioned. Harwood floors were to be covered with carpet. They were "antiquing" cabinets and dressers with paint (green, orange, beige and gold with brown stain streaked over it.) Now they are chalk painting everything to death in pastels! Maple finished colonial was the standard furniture decor, only to be replaced by heavy oak tables and chairs. (Heaven forbid you stil had chrome table and chairs!) White kitchens were only for those who had to paint the cabinets because they couldn't afford new stained ones. And trim around the house was only painted because the wood was so chewed up through the years that it had gobs of wood putty on it. I have no idea what to call my style these days. My home has knotty pine ceilings, walnut stained birch cabinets, a 60s style livingroom/media area, a rustic upstairs guest room, and a who-knows-what-you'd-call-it master bedroom. Some of my furniture is 40+ years old. I just like that it is so sturdy, and functional. Many lamps are 50+. I just like how amber murano glass looks. I will have a home like no one else, so maybe I will save the humiliation of being "on trend" now and "dated" later....See MoreHave we become slaves to kitchen fashion?
Comments (103)Cool counters, Alisa. With our last remodel in 2011, we did a white shaker kitchen. I loved it at the time. This time around we are taking a design risk. When researching for our current kitchen remodel, we looked at a lot of MCM/modern kitchens and the vast majority of them either have walnut, rift sawn oak or lacquered white slab cabinets. While those are beautiful, we wanted to do something different. We chose fluted cabinets that were inspired by a piece of MCM furniture we saw. The island will have stainless steel cabinets. I've never seen a kitchen with cabinets like this before, and I'm a little nervous about how they are going to turn out. With a white shaker kitchen, I had a vision of exactly what my space would look like -- it looked like many of the other kitchens on here. With this kitchen, we are going into unchartered territory with a unique cabinet style and stainless, which is not all that common in residential applications. It could turn out great, or it could be an epic fail. But I'm pushing myself to take a risk this time around....See Moretownlakecakes
