Hi John. Thanks for posting this - it saves me tracking it down from my records. This was something I listed from my own records a few years ago and needs updating with the new HTs out there. A few of the roses I listed above faded over time, so they're mostly zone 6 cane hardy rather than zone 5.

Basically, the Kordes HTs and floris are nearly all cane hardy in zone 6 or below with a few exceptions (like Blue Moon), and a lot but not all of the Buck HTs and floris would be cane hardy (Earth Song and Quietness are among the best). Many Delbards and Carruth HTs do fine, but some don't. I find that in general Meilland HTs are much more reliably hardy than Harkness, with the welcome exception of roses like Savoy Hotel. I should probably update this from more recent records (for instance, Polar Express from Kordes is rock solid hardy after its first year, and Wedding Bells and Beverly are also fabulous).

Maybe a midwestern/western zone 5, but not an eastern one. I don't have experience with that many of these roses, but none have been cane hardy for me. Actually, I don't think any of them with the exception of Bonica has been hardy to the standard of reasonably normal pruning taking out any live wood.

There is a thread in Organic Rose Growing that I find useful.....Roses That Perform Well on Own Roots. Khalid Waleed hosts this thread and keeps it updated with roses divided into types and zones.

I second FareM link. Sam from upstate NY definitely lists Quietness and also Viking Queen (I know, a climber) as hardy with some protection.

Cynthia, I do apologize for not being able to give you credit for the list. I almost ALWAYS make an attribution in my notes when I save something off the web; but this one time when I needed it, I had nothing, lol. I'm glad you chimed in! Since it's your list, it should be on an old thread here, but I couldn't find it.

Nippstress, very helpful list to bookmark and reference. Question: are the roses listed all grafted? I prefer own root, but some roses are only available grafted. And, thank you Fig_insanity for bringing this up again. I missed it the first time.

Julia Child is listed as a hybrid tea, and it's a floribunda. Frankly, I don't think it would be cane hardy to zone 5. Easy Does It, a floribunda, isn't even cane hardy in zone 7. Bonica, and it's sport, Royal Bonica, are very cane hardy, but are classified as shrub roses, not floribundas. The Kordes rose, Sisters Fairy Tale, aka, Garden and Home was not even very cane hardy in zone 7. I grew three of these, and finally removed them.

Flowers, I'm going to have to check that list you mentioned above. Do you remember if Julia Child performs well as an own root? Diane

Hey John, nothing to apologize for, but I appreciate the attribution. It's all information freely shared here anyway, so I'm pleased that you remembered it enough to pass things on. Flowersaremusic, most of my roses are own root (maybe 80% of them), but offhand I'd say Savoy Hotel, Hannah Gordon, Pretty Lady, and Black Cherry are the only ones of the above list that are grafted in my yard. I think the addendum was collected information from several people, since a few of those are roses I've never grown, and I think a few are officially shrubs rather than HT/floris.

Madgallica is right (as always) that regions make a difference with hardiness, and so do winters. This list is from maybe 2012 and we had a couple of brutal winters after that point that reduced that list substantially even from what I'd report from experience. The shorter revised list from the original 2012 list from me would probably be cane hardy as follows, for my mid-Plains dry zone 5, without reliable snow cover:

I always thought that except for climbers and ramblers, it is better to prune all canes to encourage new and strong ones. Does this only applies to cold zones?

I have or have had a good number of the roses on the list and not a single one is truly cane hardy in my yard in a good old fashioned winter. I will say thou that in the nineties when winter temps were not going below zero. I had a lot of cane left on many roses. However luck ran out on the weather.

There are also many roses that make it thru winter with green canes to the tip. When checked however the pith is not clean. Not a single floribunda or ht left standing this spring with lowest temp -14 degrees F with no winter protection and lots of freeze thaw. They are good down at crown level thou so I'm happy.

Perhaps another factor is the habit floribunda and ht's have of growing till the end. When we are blasted suddenly with frigid weather and all the cells in the canes are still full of water. It sure does help when we slide gradually into winter but that doesn't happen much anymore.

All I can chime in on is what survived our nasty winters a couple of years ago. When it gets below 15 with 20 MPH winds, it's cold.

That's it in my garden. I would guess that the roses that John Smith created (Randy Scott) would be pretty hardy. He does all his work in zone 6 (I think) and doesn't winter protect. Also, if you check out Wisconsin Roses, he carries a lot of stuff that is created up in his zone. I don't think he winter protects any of his stuff.

Diane, just saw your question about Julia Child. I checked in the Organic discussion, and did not see it listed as own root hardy for zone 7. That doesn't necessarily mean it isn't - just that it has not been added to the list so far. Khalid is doing a great service by keeping that list updated as more info comes in. With it being spring now, I'm sure there will be more activity on that thread in the coming weeks. You can find it here.

I have Julia Child here (own root), usually dies back to the ground, but by the end of the summer is 3-4 feet tall. Would probably be larger, but gets some filtered shade in the afternoon. When Julia first was available here locally, I only ever saw own roots being offered. I guess I haven't paid attention lately to whether they are grafted or not!

Actually, my question was about how vigorous Julia grows as an own root, versus, grafted. All my Julias are cane hardy here, but I was sold an own root Julia last year when I wanted grafted, and it didn't grow well over the season, but it survived our winter just fine. The big Julias in front, grafted, are leafed out, and I need to do some pruning on them, always a challenge when they each have what looks like 100s of canes!....So how would you compare the growth rate and vigor of JC grafted V. own root? Diane, my Julia Childs are own root grows to about 3-4 feet like Julie's JC. The only time I have ever had surviving cane is back when winters pretty much stayed in the 10 degree range as a low. Having lived here my whole life I consider that to be a mild winter.

Another thing is life span of roses here. No way as long as I here about roses growing out west. Always thought it was the midwest moisture that rose are not to fond of.

Posted at the same time. I can only speak for areas around me. Most JC's resold grafted here. In order to get own root I needed to order on-line. I have not seen any difference here between grafted and own root. My experience only wonder what others will say.

I don't have Julia, Diane. My only yellow is Golden Celebration.

Randy Scott is NOT winter hardy here in SE WI. Only way I can get it through is with styrofoam boxes. Even budded on Multiflora its tender here...

JJpeace - we got off track and didn't respond to your question about whether everything but climbers and ramblers should be pruned back to the ground to encourage growth. I would actually advise the opposite in cold zones, since you want as much healthy cane as you can get to regrow the rose in the spring, particularly in HTs and floris where this is unlikely in zone 5 to start with. Think of the canes of roses after winter as batteries for the rose. It's stored energy that helps to jumpstart growth in the spring, and provides a lot more growth points for new canes to start from and grow larger in the season, rather than always having to restart from the ground each year. That's also the reason we aren't usually advised to pre-prune the roses in winter for cold zones, since many roses lose the ends of their canes to winter but will maintain some live cane halfway down if you keep as much of the original cane as possible. Wait till spring to prune, and then only as much as is dead or dying cane unless it's a particularly robust grower, in cold zones.

Plenty of roses CAN regrow from the ground each year if necessary, but why make them do so if it's not needed? Some roses are too wimpy to regrow from the ground if they don't have surviving cane, and I don't want to risk it if it's not necessary. In warmer zones it may be necessary to do a more drastic prune periodically to take out old underperforming canes that are past their best life but that so rarely happens in our HTs and floris in zone 5 that it's not a good practice to rely on. The winter already kills off most of the canes anyway, so I celebrate and keep any healthy cane I can for as long as I can.

The battery analogy also explains an odd pattern of growth you can get in roses that look like they've survived the winter but really haven't. You can get a rose to leaf out in the spring and then all of a sudden within a week or so die never to return in later spring. What may happen is that the stored energy in the canes was enough to jumpstart a little growth (i.e. battery operated power) but there wasn't enough root support or health in the canes below your new growth to sustain that growth (not enough gas in the tank).

Cynthia: Agree with no pruning before winter. That's what High Country Roses advised: prune in spring for cold-zone. Thanks to your list I bought Lagerfeld and LOVE it, it gives the most blooms in cool & wet fall. It survived 4 winters, so it's hardy.

Poseidon is my most hardy roses with 3 feet of green canes last winter .. I have it since 2014. Stephen Big Purple survived 9 winters, until I moved it and it died through a dry winter. Strike it rich died to the crown for the past many years, but always grows canes back quickly. Louis Este is also vigorous & survived more than 3 winters. Agree with posters above that 3+ winter survival is the benchmark for hardiness.

Also digging deep for drainage helps. In spring when I dug out roses that died through my zone 5 winter (-20 F below zero) .. I poured a 5-gallon bucket of water down and WATER DID NOT DRAIN !! Before planting any roses, I pour a 5-gallon bucket of water down to check for drainage. If it doesn't drain, I dig further, often down making a large trench like 3 feet wide and at least 2.5 feet deep. I also put gypsum down at the bottom of planting hole for faster drainage.
