Entry Door Color

My home is a light gray dryvit (synthetic stucco) with gray brick accents. I am going to have a contractor refinish and stain the double door entry. The doors are oak and currently are a natural oak color. I'd like to change this. I've narrowed the choices down to minwax gel mahogany or coffee. The coffee would be more contemporary but I'm a little concerned with going this dark. Thoughts?

What direction does the door face and do you have a screen door?

Door faces East and there is no screen door.

Thank you for your response Petesmom. You are right, the areas below the shaker aren't complete. The shingles will be repeated there. We originally selected a dark reddish brown door in Sherwin Williams 2838 Polished Mahogany, but my interior designer thinks that the door will get lost in the dark brick, dark mortar, etc. That made me second guess our decison. If you go with a 3/4 window door you still have light coming in. Do you put screens in your storms in the summer? If not I do not think you will need them if you go fiberglass. Here is a link to therma tru doors, think lowes carries them... There are many with windows to let light in:). Provia carries very nice Faux wood doors too. Thanks everyone! I had been trying to find a low-maintenance door (at the suggestion of pretty much everyone), but I think real wood is the only way to get what we really want. Which makes me happy, because I think that's what I really wanted all along :-) Stained it is. aktillery- Thanks! We went with mostly Integrity windows with a few Marvins worked in where sizing made it necessary. We went with the ebony which is technically black, but it's not a jet black. My dad thought they were bronze when he saw them in the sunshine.

Thinking reds/burgundy, orange/copper colours. Best place to look is Sherwin-Williams Historic Exterior Color collection. It's in the back of the new ColorSnap fandeck and they also have brochures (some stores still do anyway).

You get morning sun and no screen door to create an oven-like airspace to bake your door which means there's no technical reason why you couldn't go darker. Of course, a darker stain color is typically higher maintenance but other than that it seems it's really about design and aesthetics.

Which stain color goes with the Dryvit gray best?

Is the doorway inset and would the shaded inset plus the darker stain color on the door make it look like a black hole? In other words, do you need the lighter color on the door so it can be seen easier/better from the curb?

Here's a picture of the house. The front door is recessed. Also, I would like both inside and outside to be the same color. I think black may have the potential to look like a black hole. Thanks for your input Lori.
