PART 2 ...Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes.... oh my
Comments (38)Good job on the fireplace it looks GREAT moved down.... and no one but you will ever know it's not perfect. It fits the wall much better. Gorgeous actually. But more important is that it was IMPORTANT enough to both of you to have it lowered. That's all that matters. As far as the granite....Both edges, the one you wanted and the one they're forcing on you, look to me too substantial for the edging you have on the rest of your granite (again it's a personal thing). One suggestion... have you asked them about other edging styles? One that might satisfy you but less chance of breaking the piece if changed? Several people here have talked about detailed granite edges. I had one in my other home and agree it's a pain to keep clean (toothbrushes helped). But you mentioned the reason they don't want to give you the right one is it probably will destroy the piece. And like you said they have no more pieces in stock. If they cut and break it then have to get another piece it could take several weeks (or months) for the piece to be shipped and fitted. And even then it might not exactly match the pieces already installed. Are you willing to wait for that to move into your home? Or is it such a personal thing that it will truly drive you crazy for years to come if you leave it like it is now? If that is the case rather than the granite place just not getting it right then you owe it to yourself to not give in on this one either. Or give up on the $600. While we were building 3 other couples divorced over their builds. In each instance it was in the final phase of the build when things were getting ripped out over and over to meet one idea of perfection over the other's. I'm not even saying that applies to you... in the least... so please do not take it as such....all I'm saying is sometimes it's more stressful holding on to an idea than it's worth. On my home DH and GC both wanted to do a poplar ceiling painted white in my "rustic" kitchen. I fought tooth and nail over that one and won. I've never regretted it for one minute. You have to decide what to fight for and what to give up. Good luck....See Moremade a BIG mistake
Comments (20)I missed this when you first posted, and am glad to see you have some beautiful, beautiful examples of stretching trim to your ceiling. With all sorts of respect for anyone wanting to help and giving ideas of what would work for them, I would not want a space up top, nor would I want my cabinets lifted more out of my reach...I can reach the bottom and barely the 2nd shelves in my upper cabs, and I like that. I have 6 inches of space above my cabinets while I await my cabinetmaker dh to get to that molding on his to-do list. I was amazed in what a short time so much dust could collect up there! If you dreamed of cabinets to the ceiling and were talked out of them, somewhat under duress, I am afraid you couldn't be happy with cutting back and making do. I am interested to know what you decided....See MoreHow to handle when a mistake is made...
Comments (8)I had a similar problem. I purchased my cabinets from a cabinetmaker located 3 hours away. Difference was I sent cabinet maker the wrong dimensions for the fridge. Even though it was clearly my mistake, he offered to redo the cabinet at cost. I took him upon this. I think we both won because I ended up ordering additional cabinets for banquette. When my architect made a major mistake that caused increased construction costs, I chose to eat it because it wasn't worth the battle. I would try to talk to your cabinet maker and see what options he can offer to do it correctly, as you wish. I think a small cost increase is reasonable because there was an error in info provided to him. Let him know that a five inch overhang or wall adjustment is not acceptable to you....See MoreHelp - Have I made a hugely expensive mistake?!
Comments (27)If your cabinets put off a yellow tone, you need to get rid of that blue first thing. Your blue is much too bright for a yellow toned cream cabinet and together, they'll look awful. I'd go with either the gorgeous blue suggested above (in the bathroom example) which has a green undertone to it, or go with a soft green, but stay away from pastel or violet blues. They clash something awful with yellow tone cream. I'm afraid you did make a mistake, and it's rather a big one (I hate painting trim...mind you, I'd do it in a heart beat in your situation, but I still hate it LOL). White and cream need to be carefully mixed if they're going to work out. The white needs to not have blue undertones (crisp white) but instead needs to lean towards the yellow or pink. Yours looks to be in the crisp blue tones of white, (think snow or iceberg). Ya just can't mix that well with yellow toned ivory or cream. It again clashes just as bad as your blue paint. It needs to be painted again, and in a color matched, but perhaps a shade or two lighter, than the cabinets, if you want a nice flow. Your mistakes aren't hugely expensive, but they are hugely visable if you leave them as is. Even going to a soft green or changing the blue won't fix it. Either the cabs need paint (I wouldn't paint a new factory finish myself) or the trim, and definately the walls!...See Moretackykat
