My season's first roses! Including a wow! Ebb Tide
Comments (8)I don't know what the mystery rose is, but I love it! Hope you figure out who the mystery lady is. Some of my HTs were unfairly attacked by mothzillas also...weird how they pick and choose certain roses to eat, isn't it? Can u post pics of Lilac Rose when she blooms? I am thinking I might want one of those next year. Thanks for enabling me, like I really need any outside help from others LOL. -t...See MoreMuch fragrance in first season roses?
Comments (9)Lovely pictures, John. It seems like Baronne Henriette de Snoy is popping up everywhere to tempt me, lately. (Don’t look, Lady, you do not have room!) Darren, I’m much relieved to see that Louise Odier IS on your “smelly list”! LOL I would have felt like I had misled you, if she was scentless for you. I have many roses that have been disappointing in the scent department in the beginning. (Marie Pavie) Others have been amazing immediately.(Princesse Charlene de Monaco) I have also had some of my roses not produce much scent while growing in a container, and then been very well scented once planted into the ground. There are so many factors that can affect the scent of your roses, maturity, air humidity and temperature, soil, age of the particular bloom itself, time of day, how well hydrated the plant is, and even your own nose on that particular day. I’m finding the biggest factors here, are plant maturity and the weather. Almost nothing has scent at over 90F and under 20% humidity. Some of my Bourbon roses seem to be the exception to this, and Louise Odier is one of them. I can always count on her for blooms and scent. I hope you’re enjoying yours as much as I am mine. In your wonderful mild climate, I’m sure you’ll find many more roses beginning to produce scent as they grow. Lisa...See MoreFavorite first time bloomers this season
Comments (46)So hard to pick 3, but here goes #1 must be Bengali, I got 2 fans last fall, each fan bloomed, every bloom absolutely perfect, at least to my eyes. I could go out at 6 a.m. and the bloom be open and looking so nice. In person, the bloom is darker than my camera shows Claudine's Charm would be #2. I could have wished for more blooms, but the ones it had were beauties Jerry Hyatt arrived this spring, so I was pleased that it bloomed. It didn't have a lot of blooms, but I was so impressed...See MoreFavorite First Time Bloomers of the Season
Comments (7)It was hard to narrow it down to five. Spacecoast Alpha Wolf is still in a pot but the pollen has gone all over the garden. I hope we get some seeds from it. I was impressed with the color of Carnosaur. It is actually a club plant we are babysitting. We will get to keep a double fan in three years when we take it back to the club. Forever the Optimist came from Canada the spring of '18, but it didn't bloom last season. It is more lavender than it appears here. We are exciting about the possibilities of breeding with Heavenly Be My Valentine, which is an offspring of Tet. North Wind Dancer. Luscious Kiss was a bonus plant (I love bonuses!) It is a small flower with a tall (for a small) scape. I managed to set one pod on it and its pollen went around the garden. I want to create tall diploid minis or smalls with lots of buds. Crackling Fire is a diploid (and we grow mostly tets), but I wanted it because it is a reverse bicolor. There are not very many of them. For my runners-up, I picked these two. Little Donnie Darko has such a neat shape on tall arching scapes. It was covered in buds and now it has a few pods too. Stoke the Fire has a nice eye. I hope this one is hardy (it's from Louisiana) and I used its pollen a lot early in the season. Wow, that was hard! There were so many others I could have included. Nancy...See MoreKippy
