So, what's working, and what isn't?
Comments (17)Here's my update from the not used and not yet blooming lists. Four o'Clocks--Are blooming nicely now, but whenever I look inside, there's no nectar. None at all! I haven't seen the hummers at them, and this is probably why. They look great, but how disappointing! Blue Lobelias (Lobelia "Fan Blue")--I just saw a bird visit these this afternoon. I'm not sure if she got anything, but she dipped into a couple flowers before zipping over to the feeder. Interestingly, this summer I've been experimenting with making feeders out of Sculpey clay which closely imitate the hummingbird flowers in my garden. I made a blue Lobelia last week that is very realistic looking. I'm hoping that my feeders are habituating them to new colors and forms. It's hard to say because I'm not doing a round the clock study, but it seems like they didn't touch the lobelias until I put that feeder up. I put the feeder up a few nights ago, and when I got up the next day they were already using it without hesitation. I wonder what their reaction was when they first arrived in the early morning and saw a purple flower, instead of the usual red ones I've been making! I'm sorry to say I wasn't up early enough to see their astonishment. All of this probably deserves its own separate post, because it's pretty neat trying out all these different shapes and colors of flowers. I'm going to try making a nasturtium next. Cardinal Climber and Cypress vine--They're blooming sparsely on bushy, 20 foot vines. I just started fertilizing them with some "Bloom Booster," but they still aren't getting as many flowers as I would like. Maybe they don't like this ridiculous heat wave. Thank God it's finally cooling off. This afternoon, a hummer flew very near the vines, which made me think they might be getting used early in the morning. It seems I'm never up early enough to witness this, and then the blooms are kaput by the afternoon. I've still seen no action at my annual verbenas, my red petunias, mixed color snapdragons, Pelargonium geranium, Dianthus chinensis (although they might be sneaking into these), Impatiens, pompom or cactus zinnias, or my Oriental lilies. Bummer! I'm still waiting on the hardy Hibiscus (bunches of buds), and the Lobelia cardinalis is just beginning to bloom. They will be my last new flowers of the season. I'll let you know!...See MoreEven the Hosta Auction isn't so safe
Comments (15)what made you presume that the guy who runs the library .... has the time or ability to vet everyone who gratuitously sells on the library??? i do believe there are more than enough disclaimers regarding such .... caveat emptor.. eh??? the other thing i dont get .. 99% of these sellers are home business ... and yet you expect service greater than a fortune 100 company ...is your life really changed if your hosta show up a day or a week late??? all that said.. i FULLY understand the need to get.. fondle ... and plant your new hosta.. been there done that.. even rolled around in them ... BUT lets have some perspective here .... you probably wouldnt even complain this much if your mail order heart meds were late ... rotflmbo ... BUT GOD FORBID MY HOSTA ARE A DAY LATE .... just messin with ya.. have a great day ... ken PS: maybe the seller felt they needed to lay on the driveway for a week before being sent ......See MoreI am so glad yesterday is now past !!!!
Comments (28)Bob ate his dinner and all of it, which is unusual.. it is so difficult to keep his weight up, but they say the emphysema is eating up most of his energy and as long as his blood sugar and cholesterol, etc.. levels are good.. just to let him eat whatever it is he wants. Tonight, he asked for some brownies.. so I whipped up a pan of them.. he at a third of the pan.. lol... but then said he felt sort of sick.. (jeez I wonder why ) But after about an hour and a nice cup of coffee, he said he felt better... I have to be very careful about scatter rugs now, and have taken them all up. It is too easy for him to mis step and take a tumble.. and I am getting a fellow to install a good sturdy banister on the stairs going down to his man cave.. He doesn't want any, but I think he should have something for balance.. He is feeling pretty good, but he is more childlike than ever before.. but still is loving ..... he does have a temper, but it is just frustration that his body parts just don't function like they did 10 years ago.. We had a nice talk tonight over supper.... and he asked if I had considered his going to a nursing home... I assured him that a NH would only be a very very very last resort, and I would look for other alternatives first... and that I would always be here for him as long as the Lord will grant us that blessing. He seemed to be satisfied with my answer... and I meant every word... We will see the doctor tomorrow morning at 8:30, so maybe we will find some answers there, but I seriously doubt he will be able to offer any more than what we already have... The doctor is an Ultra Christian (Pentacostal)and believes in the power of prayer... and also understands how to deal with the spiritual side of doctoring too....so we are very fortunate to have him... Please keep Bob in your prayers as we begin another day... Please pray that I am able to remain focused on the cross and not of the world and what it has to offer. (Not always an easy thing) Thank you all, Kitt...See MoreIs this fig ripe yet? Seems so, but isn't purple...
Comments (6)Okay, so I gave it two more days. It purpled up about halfway before I decided it was too dangerous to leave it any longer - it was REALLY soft and starting to split at the bottom. Soft enough that I was afraid of holding it too hard, I felt like my fingers would go right through! I do bet I could have given it even one more day and it would have finished purpling but I didn't want to push it. It tasted good! The purple part was of course sweeter, but the whole thing tasted good. I've never tried a fig before so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like but I count it as a succes. Here is a pic of it before and after I cut it open!...See Moresunnyca_gw
