x Post- Be DILIGENT: A reminder to watch new growth for RRV

I posted this in the Antique forum first, since it involved an old rose, but it applies here, as well:

My roses are in full growth, what didn't get frost burned last week. And today while cleaning up the beds, I found a very suspicious new basal on Cardinal de Richelieu. I'm positive it's RRV, not frost burn: too thick, too congested, wrong color, the classic witches broom, but just three inches long. Since it's coming directly from the crown of an own root rose, I'm afraid the good Cardinal is history. He's one of my newer roses, and doesn't even have any suckers I could attempt to save. He showed no signs of infection when he went to sleep last autumn, but our Fall was so long and warm, I'm sure the mites were active far past the time they should have been hibernating.

So, just a reminder, watch new growth on every rose. Check often starting as soon as growth begins! And not just at the tips, but check the new basals as well.
