Not really. But I have read of "Heritage" raspberries being grown there in odd manner as an annual, presumably planted in fall and harvested in spring (and dying or plowed in summer I suppose). In Zone 9b you might be able to grow the tropical black Mysore raspberry if you can find it from a hobbiest. You normally grow them from seeds. They are fun but lack the aroma of a northern raspberry.

Mark I am not a proffessional by all means but I know most raspberries are fairly easy to grow and don't require special treatment. Unless your soil is clay or really poor, all you will need is to add some composted dirt or peat moss mixed with your own soil in the holes. Makes the holes 3 times as big as the root or root ball you have. You will need a fence or some sort of long sturdy support that you will twine the rasberry shoots as they grow. Plant one every 4 ft or more (they grow really fast once established) As for deers I have always had dogs so to me never been a problem. birds don't usually eat enough of the berries to cause real problems, I just share. perhaps your area could be bad in which case you can net all around (but that would be some pain to deal with, however it might help with the deer problem as well) the only reason I answered you is because there are so little activity in these forums I thought no one will. I think the odd one is actually a new floricane and the less thorny ones are laterals from last years canes in fact the top right of your pic is showing some buds.

test dig has started since earlier... turns out the difficult part is lifting the stones... it's very heavy !!! digging 9 inches is doable. seriously I think 18 is a bit too ambitious for me with hand tools. I've dug down The first test and so far all the roots have been shallow as per any google search. my barrier might have to be of a C shape where in case the roots do hit the barrier and go up or down it'll at least have a guide for it to turn around and back into my neighbors patch lol. serious I hope to finish today ... ;/
