First time poster, long time lurker need advise on appliances.
Comments (9)I disagree with Emily_mb. In my home growing up in the '60's, we had stainless wall ovens and cooktop. Stainless has been classic for the kitchen for decades, and isn't going anywhere. She didn't specify what "first signs" she is referring to, but you can open any Architectural Digest, which typically shows $100K kitchens, and find stainless appliances. You will also see panelled appliances there, but panelling appliances is more costly. You have not mentioned a budget, which it would be helpful to this thread if you did. Anyway, things that go "out" quickly, usually have also come "in" quickly, such as avocado green appliances, which burst on the scene in the '70's, and then were gone just as quickly. Having said that, I myself have white cabinets and a mix of stainless and white appliances in my kitchen. The combination is a little more "homey" than all stainless would be. I also have my dishwasher panelled, because that appliance is the most prone to water drips down the front....See Morehello from a first time poster long time reader
Comments (26)Hey there, Frugaljon....welcome aboard. I wish to recommend to your pleasure a video on YouTube about the Hanging Hosta of Hampshire. Ever heard of them? I've watched the videos innumerable times, trying to note details of how they manage so many hosta, and what happens when winter comes, you know, just looking and dreaming. I link to one such video below. My hosta garden is 25 x 100 and is in coastal Alabama (near the Gulf of Mexico), and my zone is considered 9a or at best 8b. We have an undependable winter here, but we manage a few freezes and cold temps enough to make dormancy possible. Get ready to join the fun day after Christmas, when the Hosta Alphabet series begins. Until then, similar threads exist for last last several years. Wonderful resource. Comments (2)Have you eliminated the possibility of insects? One of the brown areas is similar to a burn or underwatering in high heat but unlikely based on your location description of north facing window. While not directly related I would look for a more sunny location to keep the plant....See MoreFirst draft house plan, long time lurker
Comments (14)I think the first thing that hit me was the open living, dining, kitchen area, which will be a space where all sounds, sights and smells will pervade everywhere. Will it be where your young children play and where their toys will be stored and out on the floor? Said differently, this plan doesn't look like one where long-term, age-in-place living can take place, but beginning with young children. The fact that there is a bedroom adjacent to the kitchen suggests that you may have living needs and preferences you haven't described. It's an unusual location for a bedroom. If an angled garage is good, then angle it in the opposite direction to keep it from being a negative visual element of the front elevation. And of course, passive solar design depends on windows (lots of them) with properly designed roof overhangs, arbor/trellis designs or other shading devices. We don't see any of those. Finally, for someone highly regarded with over 30-years experience, designing with a process which only produces one floor level at a time is very suspect, since proper architectural design, especially for a passive solar house, is conducted by looking at site planning, floor plan options, elevations and roof plans all simultaneously. That's because a decision in one of these areas directly affects all the other areas, and vice versa. As an industrial engineer you should know that engineering solutions are not created by simply considering one element of the engineering situation at a time, linear fashion. Design is a comprehensive, not sequential, endeavor. Good luck on your project....See Morebethnorcal9
