Closet design for reach-in closet "dead" areas.

Looking for any idea for how to make a closet, like the one pictured, easy to access on the sides. There is 28" of space that is only accessible inside the closet (so 118" wide closet with a 62" opening). The only things I can think of that aren't a total pain to put in those areas are hanging racks, but this is a kid's room and if I'm being honest most things are going to be hung up.

Drawers in those areas? But then they have to have room to open. Shelving? But it is so deep.
Is there some miracle solution?
