Seconds after I post this type of thing occurs to me....But then the drawers and shelves in the center can't be full depth. But I'm guessing nothing can be full depth if I want to utilize the corners.

Hanging rods on the sides with shallow shelves in the middle for shoes and folded clothing might work.

I have 26", so I think I'm good. We designed all the closets to be at least 24".

I would suggest to have two hanging sections (28"wide) on each return wall and another two-three sections (depends on inventory) in the middle .This is the option if you have all the sections facing the door (the same lay out that you have in the picture with drawer and shelving sections).

I put shelves in the dead ends and have it restricted to (in your example) 62" of hanging space. About a third is full height and the other is half height so approx 22" of full height hanging and 80" of half height hanging.

I use the shelves for suitcases, rubbermaid totes, other large things like that.

It's not ideal, but it's better than what I had.

A neighbor expanded the opening of her kids' closets; she put double doors in (in place of the original single door and walls on either side of it. I thought it was very clever, and the carpentry cost wasn't that bad.
