Is $1000 extra charge for installing a free-standing tub normal?

We are building a house and I have my heart set on a clawfoot tub (the builder plans had a drop in originally). I understand the filler and tub are more expensive, but they want to charge me $1000 extra (above what they would charge to install a drop in) to plumb in a free standing tub. This seems excessive to me, when there are fewer parts involved and its being done in new construction, so pipes don't have to be relocated. Anyone have any experience with this?

I went with the lower quote in my last house to install a pedestal tub. It had a very slight leak and this guy eventually refunded my money and gave up trying to fix it. He said he thought it was because of slight movement when getting in/out of the tub was the cause. I ended up having it reinstalled by a very large plumbing company and it was 1K, they put some type of concrete like base under it to prevent any movement and they guaranteed the work.

If your builder is going to do the work for 1K and guarantee it I would go with it. Less hassle and no issues if any warranty issues later. At the most you would save a few hundred, however you could be giving up a warranty and it would just not be worth it.

I would generally send 2-3 selections to him for input. After input (OhellNO, I’ll have to study on this one awhile, any is fine) I’d have the one, and he’d take care of sourcing it. Because if it came in bad or missing parts, that’s just one less thing for me to worry about. He never charged me a trip charge, and was always the point of contact on a warranty call. Even on an Easter Sunday where a defective internal valve let go ( the right direction for once!) and made for a shower you couldn’t turn off. He even helped the homeowner mop up the bit that made it outside the shower. I miss that salty old guy. His son just isn’t the same. He’s horrified by my potty mouth. LOL! I bought an AMERICH WRIGHT base level acrylic tub for $1,000 from a bath and kitchen store in 2017 and it is a piece of plastic. After two years It was stained, difficult to clean and never feels entirely clean, the caulk around the tub has needed replacement several times, and the Americh label partly wore off almost immediately. I never use any abrasive cleaning products (all organic). When I contacted the manufacturer they pointed out that I the care instructions said I was supposed to WAX my tub with high-quality carnauba paste type wax. Wax my tub? They also referred me to a very expensive tub cosmetic repair company. Unfortunately I removed an old enamel tub instead of refinishing it. Number 1 worst decision in my remodel after seeking lots of advice. I dream of ripping this one out and replacing it with an enamel tub. Moral of the story here is everyone has different wants. Back in the 2000's all I would see are jetted drop-in tubs, so I perceived those to be "the best that rich people bought" lol. Gotta take a step back and figure out your personal wants and how you'll realistically use I agree for mobility, drop-in is much easier to use Heat retention, I'm still voting for cast iron. I've owned insulated fiberglass with jets, used just about everything in between, then own a freestanding cast iron now. Realistically, you draw a bath then sit in it for maybe half an hour. I've seen fiberglass/acrylic units with heat pads in them (...why?) to combat this, or you do what everyone has done for hundreds of years and turn the hot valve on low. My last fiberglass tub, the tub would feel a hair colder than the water as it cooled down at the end. My current iron tub doesn't do that, seems to maintain temp longer, but again metal=conduction. Could think resale, or maybe you'll barely ever use it so it's more for looks. Can't go wrong if you do the right thing for you

Here are some ideas to think about. You want storage for items like towels, candles, TP, etc. What about a free standing cabinet? Part (or all) can be glass fronted where towels, candles, bath bombs, even TP and less attractive things can be stored in baskets. By putting the shower door opening toward the vanity, this would free up the area at the tub end of the shower. An attractive cabinet against the wall next to the closet door would be a good location (see my edits). Then, a nice bench can be placed next to the tub to hold a burning candle, a fresh towel, a book, and a glass of wine to enjoy your bath with. What mystifies me is when people comment that the toilet is being seen as something terrifying or revolting. Nobody here said that about this toilet. There was just a desire to minimize it's view while using the tub to improve the tub area aesthetic. No need for such hyperbole.

Clawfoot tubs are lovely, but everything about them is expensive!

What if you do a wall-mounted faucet instead of a freestanding model?

I knew the tub and fixtures would be more, and we were going with a wall mount faucet. The plumbers just don't like installing clawfoot tubs. They claim all kinds of things can go wrong and it requires more workers than a drop in tub, so they tack on $1000 dollars MORE than they charge to install a drop in. That is not for the fixtures, that is just to line up the blasted hole in the floor to the drain in the tub (how hard is it to measure?!!). I did get a quote for all the plumbing in our house from a different plumber, but I don't think my builder will want to change. Apparently most of the builders in town use this plumbing service, which specializes in new construction.

I don't think $1K is that off. We decided to add in a clawfoot as well, but we had to move a couple walls that were already framed so all in, more but my contractor told me the clawfoot does add a lot more expense. He's been good to me so I trust him, mostly :). You want it done right...

Too cheap for all of the extra labor that is involved.
