Has anyone refaced or replaced cabinets with Scherr's? Opinions?
Comments (4)Hi, We received our kitchen and bathroom cabinets from them in late December. I installed them all in a couple days with help from my dad (we still have the drawer fronts to install because we were waiting to finish the electrical). In a nutshell, in our four room remodel, this has been the easiest component. We purchased red birch with solid maple ply boxes for the kitchen and select maple for the bathroom. We had the matte clear coat applied. The hardwood selection is really nice-- not that it is critical for you, however. But they do a very nice job matching the grain. The boxes went together smoothly. I would say that their instructions are good, but not great. It is a bunch of loose papers. If your remodel is like ours, it is hard to keep the papers together. A three ring binder or spiral binder would have helped. Also they include some directions, such as how to install the leg levers, but don't tell you how to align the leg levers. I think my dad and chewed on that for 10 or 15 minutes before it was clear. The doors are really well made-- ours have solid wood inserts and are dead flat (no warping). The hardware they use is top notch (e.g., Blum glides and hinges) and installing and adjusting doors was a snap. We also found it easy to work with Scherrs. I spend all day on the computer and so emailing Leon was very efficient and it was helpful to have it all in writing. Our design included a very unusual custom piece. Once Leon figured out what we wanted, they were able to make it without a hitch. Gotta run, but happy to answer more questions. I would have no reservations with recommending them....See Moresolid vs plywood maple for bathroom vanity
Comments (2)The plywood will be more stable over the long run than solid wood. That is because the plywood will not move due to moisture/humidity/temperature changes like solid wood does. The veneer is as stable as the plywood and will not chip/peel exceprt under unusual circumstances. To make a solid wood side 20 by 27, several boards would have to be glued together. That is not only more expensive, it allows for warping/bowing by the boards even after gluing together---and the glued joint will be stronger than the wood---so movement often results in cracks. The back of the vanity is particle board because it seldom needs to be anything more expensive. Any warpage that affects that part would also affect plywood or solid wood---which would cause a larger problem from swelling/expanding due to the moisture. Sounds to me like you got an above average quality job....See MoreOak Cabinets: Reface or replace?
Comments (16)What great feedback! Thank you! My main concern is getting rid of the honey oak wood/grain. I love the look of wood, but not this color of wood for our house. We re-painted, re-carpeted, and re-fixtured our whole house last summer (replacing 12 ceiling/'boob' lights with recessed LED lighting. What a difference! I’ve uploaded more recent, mostly de-cluttered pics. For those concerned, the “boob” light was replaced last summer with the other fixtures. :) Sink light was from Houzz (https://www.houzz.com/products/progress-lighting-p5050-fresnel-lens-1-light-6125w-mini-pendant-prvw-vr~17052352?lid=7007403). A recessed can was not possible due to the slant of the ceiling/roof. Once we do these renovations, the lights may need to change again, but we will see... We will move forward with hiring a KD and pricing out refacing vs replacing the cabinets. What fun to design a more functional space! Appliance garage, functional pantry, deep drawers, under-cabinet lighting, etc.! Our island is quite functional for our life, so will plan to keep it. Maybe add the deep drawers on it and extend to contain the trash can. All depends on the overall budget, though. I am very afraid of wood floors in a kitchen. We do a lot of life in our kitchen, so don't want to worry about inevitable water damage on wood floors. One more thought... recommendations on painting all new cabinets white versus keeping wood (different than honey oak - more like the table). It seems like the space would look too closed in, Especially with a new refrigerator upper cabinet and new pantry. If we go with painted white cabs, we will replace with stainless appliances. Granted, I've not done this before, so recommendations are welcome! Also, thoughts on continuing a white tile backsplash up and around the sink window versus cutting off at the normal height?...See MoreKitchen Cabinet Advice - Paint vs. Reface
Comments (30)Ok, few things. cabs are maple or birch. don't even consider Minwax for your floors. bottom of the barrel as far as quality goes. if you want the floors redone, call in pro refinisher. maybe think about doing a very light natural, using Bona system. I wouldn't go darker. Cabs themselves are fine. However, I'd want to change the countertops. You can try paint first, but if you want gray subway tile, consider changing out that black granite. these are a similar color. if you went darker on the walls like this, it would make the cabs really stand out. (lighter countertop though) Do a black pendant over the island. I even like the idea of painting just your island black. (but I'd redo the countertops. c-below) tried to give you a black island. for sure you'd need lighter countertops w/this look. if you must keep the black counters, you could try these pendants. There isn't one thing white in that kitchen. doing a white subway tile for the backsplash would look odd. And w/the more modern style, I think if you want white, do something other shape. but if you really want to change something start w/the countertop. I'd do something like this. lighter countertops. Maybe insert some glass in few of the uppers. similar cabs with marble (or a quartz marble) Here's your white subway, but notice the granite. The white tile compliments the granite. Putting white tile against your black countertop would look horrible. here's a light maple with medium gray quartz. It's meh. not much diff that what you have also like this for your pendant. (have you thought about changing your hardware?) if you don't like the dark charcoal paint color idea, here are some others. another option. lighter countertops and a back painted glass backsplash. you'll notice that most of these all have the same light floors like you have. spend your money on new countertops, lighting and backsplash if you want more of a drastic change. options for countertop...See MoreGray & Walter, Ltd.
