Replanting apples in the same spot as dead apple tree?

We had some extremely large, overgrown apple trees on our property which we have just removed. They had mummified apples still on them and appeared to be diseased. We would like to replant with a baby honey crisp tree in the same spot, as well as a variety of stone fruits. What steps should we take to make sure the new trees are not infected, if indeed that was the problem with the old ones?

Clean up all mummies, and then spray the soil with fungicide? Spray the new trees? Forget about it and choose a new spot? Thanks!
