Is this a reasonable per/square foot cost of kitchen remodeling
Comments (15)Adding on is more expensive, and the kitchen is the highest price per square foot of any part of the house, plus you are in a more expensive area -- but that still seems high to me. Keep in mind that it can cost nearly as much to move something a little as to move it a lot. Same thing with adding a little -- The labor is nearly the same, the permits and the problems are nearly thesame, and only some of the materials increase. if you do rethink your approach, it pays to take the time to really study your space and options -- think outside the box and conventional approaches. We bought out house planning only on replacing counters and appliances, but 4 years later, we ripped it all out. We moved a cooktop out of the island and across that island from the sink -- made possible because we were able to install a prep sink. We also took out a corner pantry and a huge overhead light box. The kitchen feels about 50% larger and functions so much better, but we didn't change the footprint. We couldn't -- there was really nowhere we could go, so we improved the same space and got a lot more out of it. If you want to post what you have with what you need and want, I'm sure you'll get a lot of great pointers on working within the available space. Comments (12)In our case, we did consider doing it ourselves (we did a lot of the remodel ourselves), but had several big elements that were not super well-suited to first-time DIYers--mainly that we were removing a chimney (not hard, but messy and heavy), removing a wall (ditto), and drilling out ceramic tile floor, which while not hard was time-consuming. The rest of it was pretty straightforward but not as simple as modern kitchens, because it was an old house/old kitchen. So it was worth it to hire someone else to do it for the time and headache savings. We do also have pretty strict disposal laws in our state, so we would have paid some of that (I think quotes were $500ish?) just for the dumpster and permits, which the demo company handled, plus any needed tool rentals. They were also able to salvage $1500 worth of parts, so we got a tax receipt for that, which also helped offset the cost a little. (TRP, the organization we used, is the Northern California Habitat partner, so probably similar to Habitat demo programs elsewhere.) I definitely second-guessed some of our decisions on what to DIY and what to hire out, but demo wasn't one of them. :)...See Moreaverage cost for refinishing kitchen cabinets
Comments (1)Since it is predominatly labor (skilled for some), you may want to get multiple bids including man-hrs and cost - and see which comes closest to expectations: as $/man-hr. Then base you decision on the comfort feel - ie the lowest bidder need not necessarily be the best wrt non-tangibles (workmanship etc). /venkat...See MoreAverage cost kitchen cabinets
Comments (8)I also had a hard time finding out the average cost before starting my remodel, and I still can't tell you what the average is, but here is what we got and what we paid: We shopped at Home Depot and chose Kraftmaid Hamilton. The doors were some of the less expensive doors, but we got all premium finishes (paint and stain with glaze), all maple, all plywood construction. 10 Base Cabinets -36" sink base -30" standard -39" with pull out trays, -42" standard that will actually act as a window seat - 18" 3 drawers -30" 2 drawers -21" standard -18" garbage pull out -12" standard 2 Pantries -18" wide by 11" deep 18" wide by 24" deep 5 Uppers - 30" extra tall (we made a hutch) -36" -34" over fridge -18" -30" over OTR microwave Some extra things that were added to the cost were fillers, end panels, corbels if you need them, toe kicks, and molding (which was almost $1,000 on it's own). So all things that should be considered. We shopped during a promotion which offered 20% off cabinets if you buy 10, and free premium finishes. The price before the discount was $11,171.39 Hope this helps!...See Moremrspete
