I hope you find out which plants you have. Frithia and Fenestraria require completely different watering. Fenestraria leaves are completely smooth, Frithia leaves are covered in tiny bubbles. Three inches tall sounds like Fenestraria, that would be pretty huge for a Frithia. I think you can potentially grow Fenestraria and Pleiospilos together although I don't. Both have very low water needs, will become dormant in very hot weather, and grow best in spring and autumn. The difference would be that Pleiospilos thrives on full sun and heat while Fenestraria doesn't like heat and prefers a little shade in summer. Both have large showy flowers, Pleiospilos usually orange on short stems, Fenestraria white or yellow, very occasionally orange, and on long stalks. Ignore the tag. Bright light is poor advice, both plants will do poorly without direct sun although they might survive for a while. Fenestraria may flower in both spring and autumn if you grow it really well, but Pleiospilos will probably only flower in one or the other. Only water when the soil is completely dry. Don't water thoroughly unless you have extremely fast draining soil, probably in a clay pot. Generally water lightly and fairly often, don't subject the plants to long droughts. Water especially lightly if the plants are dormant in summer. Once or twice a year when they are growing strongly, you can give them a soaking. If your Pleiospilos ever develops more than two pairs of leaves you are overwatering, cut back and aim for just a single pair of leaves by the middle of summer. If your Fenestraria's oldest leaves go mushy and die off, or any leaves develop splits, then you are overwatering.

Cat....I think I stick to tried and true entirely too much. I think I should be trying to find something a little different to grow like you and Bill. I've never heard of guinea hen flowers. I do like toad lilies but I tried one and it didn't make it through my winter. I hope you will post photos later. Bill...I never saw a slug in my yard until last year. We had a lot of rain that wouldn't let up and they started showing up. Where do they come from, out of nowhere? [g] You remind me of me... when I can't sleep in the summer, I will get up and go out in my pjs with the flashlight and a paper cup and look for earwigs, which I hate! They seem to love me for some reason. Just the same I enjoy being out there at that hour. You get to see all the night creatures and some of the fragrant plants make the trip worth it. And if there is a moon out, a warm breeze and it's very quiet, it's almost magical! And you can't see all your mistakes at night. [g]

Some type of Mammillaria maybe ? The second pic does show some signs of sun burn which can happen under the following conditions. Watering when to warm a when watered maybe you used to much water. Asking when you watered did you return it to the same warm brightness right after ? Thoughts on this from me are an old statement Most every plant does not like any sudden changes cati for example do enjoy a drink and they will enjoy that drink when it's cooler. For example it doesn't rain in the middle of a zero clouds in the sky full sun day when it's already 85 - 98 degrees F ( and sometimes even warmer) then it's probably not a good idea to water yours. Just as a pointer what I do is let my arid type cacti cool down for a day or two ( Move them to an area that's still very bright but cooler ) for at least one day prior to watering, on the cooler time of the third day I return Arid cacti to there FULL HARD SUN original location in the evening Your watering method may vary. In reference ( and a PIA) an Arid land type cati moving may need to happen as often as three times during the summer here and would also get what ever rain does fall on it during the hottest parts of summer. ( which is usually none to very little) I tend to think if a summer rain is going to happen an arid lands cacti is going to feel it coming and ready s it's self ( knowing it's going to rain) long before we see or feel the rain. Off topic but I often see some of my summer growing Euphorbia start to sweat & swell 2-3 hours before it rains. (Even then we wont always get the Euphorbia promised tells of rain) One note is for certain a burnt Mam ( other than aesthetics) is not always a bad thing but would try to fond a place that's a little cooler ( shaded) during the middle of the day. Note my watering method should not to be taken as good news either I oddly favor tropical type cacti and don't have many arid type cacti.

It was June last year that I commented on this thread. Some updates: Falstaff was removed. I had enough after some serious pampering this spring without a single flower. I did love those (rare) flowers though. Madame Isaac Pereire died. It was in too dry a spot after all. My tears dried after putting my nose into Alnwick Castle. Evelyn. Moved to a sunnier position and they have taken off. Keeping them. Alexandra Duchesse de Luxembourg. My opinion hasn't changed. Doesn't thrill me. I don't hate it. From a distance it does catch the eye since the flowers are so large. She's in a holding pattern for now. Claire Austin was removed. I just didn't like yellow color fading to dirty newspaper color. Blech. Old Blush. it's still there. I'm getting used to those flowers with poor form and strident color. Pure Perfume. I discovered that they need more sun and water, but I have no place to move them to. Keeping them for now. Radio Times, moved to a pampered pot, grew a little, but never seems happy. Will not stay in my garden. William Shakespeare 2000. I discovered that the problem really is that they need more water. I may put them in pots. Off the chopping block. So I was somewhat right: some of the "eh" factor was due to cultural factors. But not all. These are now in the "eh" column: Sonia Rykiel. Flowers don't take the heat. Not very fragrant in my yard (maybe next year). Doesn't produce those glorious flowers that Fragrancenutter shows. Doesn't really want to grow. My second plant died and I've already replaced it with another Alnwick Castle. Dee-lish. Happy to grow, happy to bloom, lovely fragrance, but to my eye, not very pretty. Winchester Cathedral. It's there, it blooms well in the spring, with very short-lived flowers, then a few flowers here and there the rest of the summer. Weird fragrance. Doesn't wow me. In my garden it's just a nondescript white rose without a lot of flowers. Iceberg. I really like the fragrance, but after the spring show, the flower form is lost, and the leaves always look sickly yellow. I may replace them with Desdemona, or Bolero, or ...
