Can anyone ID this climber?
Comments (10)The flowers look like 'White Dorothy' but the foliage definitely rules out that rose. It is not 'Mme. Plantier' or 'Prosperity' either. I doubt it is 'Aimee Vibert' based upon the buds which should have darker streaks of deep pink, but it could be a Noisette. The buds on this rose are a light pink (not yellow which helps with the ID). As patriciae mentioned, it is easier to say what it is NOT: 'Snowdrift' 'Rambling Rector' 'Goldfinch' 'Venusta Pendula' 'Ruga' 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' 'Mme Alfred Carrier' 'Alister Stella Grey' 'The Garland' 'Baltimore Belle' 'Long John Silver' 'Sombreuil' 'Carnea' 'Trier' 'Rambling Rector' 'White Dorothy' What's left? Not much; but I would concentrate on the glossy foliage, slightly fringed stipules, slight "hairs" in the peduncles, light pink (as opposed to yellow or deep pink) buds and the elongated receptacle....See MoreAnyone grow Purple Climber?
Comments (6)Alicia - I didn't mean to sound harsh. Sometimes, when I get on the Garden Web it is rather late and I must have been a tad crabby. Sorry about that. I had been watching your thread to see if anyone did grow a Purple Climber. I do hope that you find something that works for you. Best regards, CJ...See MoreCan anyone recommend a white climber for me? Details inside.
Comments (26)I have to add that I tried to plant climbing roses in eastern Long Island for my cousin -- along her fence -- and was defeated by deer and, even worse, voles, which delight in sandy, pine barren soil and eat the roots, all the roots, over the winter. Sombreuil did fine for a number of years, but then one spring I was able to lift its dead carcass right out of the ground.. No roots at all. But for some reason, Baltimore Belle did better and better with every year. Also Polareis (not a climber, more like a medium- sized tree). That was on the bay side. Though down by the dock at the end of the road there were some huge untidy thickets of ancient Excelsa ramblers looking not very ornamental. I noticed, when visiting the ocean side there were ramblers in front of people's houses creeping along flat on the ground, it was so windy. They looked very pretty that way, though. In any case, there are other things to take into account besides temperature -- namely animals and windy conditions. But nothing ventured nothing gained....See MoreLayering climbers: anyone do this?
Comments (6)Wow Teka. That would be pretty. I have to read about pegging. I've decided NOT to layer for ease of pruning and disease issues. There's a small landing with a balustrade type handrail that runs off this wall so I'm going to grow her next to that. It will be at ND's feet, more or less. A few cascading canes would be pretty. I'm thinking of also having White Licorice in that bed, but don't know her growth habit, or perhaps some other bushy white like Bolero. So many roses. In the end, it will probably be whatever captures my interest on the sale rack at Lowe's. :) Also, your Tess looks really good; does she bloom well, etc? Jackie, thank for info on cl CB as I'm seriously consider her and Jean La joie for the other side of this wall. I have the winter to decide and I'm sure you'll be tired of my dithering by Spring. I've also planted Viking Queen and Falstall next to one another on the East side of this wall and hope they intermingle a bit, but I doubt they'll reach 3 stories high!!! WOW!!! Ann, I will check out that Rodale book which is new to me. And thank your for the RRD heads-up. I live in fear of this dread disease with my 80 yr old New Dawns and am trying to familiarize myself with the healthy growth of all my newly acquired roses so I'll know what's not right. In fact, my other NDs are grown horizontally and easily accessible to check and care for. That's my one worry growing climbers upright. Hopefully, the wind break provided by all my surrounding trees will provide some shelter. I can only hope. Roseseek, thanks also for the planting insight. That makes growing these climbers easier....See MoreSara-Ann Z6B OK
