I would do chrome or nickel with the stainless chimney hood.

I'd also advise that you change the corner cabinet. The diagonal boxes with it bumped up for "interest" are no longer in vogue. Modern kitchens use a 90 degree corner cabinet.

I agree with mayflowers that a metallic would be a better choice so it doesn't get lost against the cabinets. I have a photo of our (tiny) bathroom with several of the same color elements you're considering which might help you envision your space.

I agree that I would do a metallic finish. I actually don't mind angled corner cabinets. I have had both kinds in the last few years. I didn't have the angle in my last kitchen, but put it in in this new kitchen. We store big cereal boxes in there. I do agree about not popping it up higher than the others.

If you need another vote, I agree the black would get lost in a black kitchen. Nickel would look nice.

Definitely consider all big drawers instead of cabinets they are so much more functional. Nobody likes crawling around on the floor to get in the back of the cabinets. I think either one of the options for the lighting would work. I really like matte black and used it in my kitchen, all pulls and handles are matte black on dark midnight espresso cabinets, like the look.

The pantry cabinet definitely get pull outs ! You will probably end up with a microwave on the countertop if you don't want that find a place to install it. It's a big Island, microwave drawer would go good there.

Mayflowers, kelleg69 - it's kind of funny, our current corner is 90 degrees and have grown to be super annoyed at the wasted/difficult space to reach into the "dead" zone. Pic:

Seeing all of the model homes with these diagonal corners and bumped up caught our eye. We are not doing cabinets to the ceiling (10 ft) as we have in our current home (9 ft) so I thought it was a nice breakup. In any event, we're locked in without costing big dollars. cpartist, ravencajun - yes, we're doing a mixture of door and drawers, though the front side of the island is entirely cabinets that will be awkward to get to in any case because of the island overhang. All of the door cabinets (other than this side of the island) will have rollouts to avoid, as you say, crawling around.

smm5525 - so out the box for us !! But who knows. It's been murderous finding something that might work.

Curious what other lighting you'll have for the island, as the fixtures shown in this thread look attractive and may provide nice ambient lighting, but I don't think they'll do a good job of getting light down onto the countertop work area. Other considerations gleaned from lots of reading here and from experience in our own kitchen: the bright filaments in clear bulbs can be pretty harsh and cast sharp shadows; clear glass fixtures may show dirt quicker than you'd like, especially in a kitchen.

AvatarWalt - the bare bulbs scare me a little, too. We are going to have 6 or 7 recessed lights in the "L" space behind the island, plus one over the kitchen sink.

Cheryl - very pretty fixture. I'd be concerned that it wouldn't give off enough light with a single bulb.

They are a single bulb each (we have 2 pendants over a 6' peninsula) and they actually give off quite a bit of light, way more than any fixture we purchased that take the vintage style edison bulbs. We hate the LED cans that we have in the kitchen and always just use these pendants and halogens we have over the sink area. this is my kitchen:

Love the hicks. We almost went with them but got the Feiss version instead. Where are your stools from agk2003?

Sm5525, those are the wainscott from cb2 in the photo. We ended up replacing them with the alder from west elm because we felt the wainscott were too matchy with the floor.

So, this is where we ended up. We chose to go with two Lights Up Weegee Black Mumm pendants over the island and are totally thrilled with them. They add organic warmth with an understated approach.

And, from a practical standpoint, with 72w halogen bulbs and the built-in diffusers, they are effective. With the dimmer, we have amazing flexibility for our kitchen lighting.

This decision and process were truly agonizing. I appreciate the input.
