What do you do to keep your gardening groove off season?
Comments (21)Hey Anniebert-- To clarify, I do most of my gardening in PA (Adams County) zone 6, north of Frederick by 40+ miles. The rest I do in Westminster, MD. I've lived here in MD 5 years and have gone by the wisdom of the local plant nursery (Bowmans) more than by Victory Seeds' frost chart--which most of the links on Google guide one to. Here in Westminster, the common wisdom is to wait until May because the last frost of the season is fickle and can occur right up to mid-May. So we wait to put tomatoes in by that date. Now up in Adams County, also considered in the MidAtlantic zone 6, an examination of the actual last/first frost/freeze records from 1972 to current show that the last frost did not occur sooner than April 20th, but is mostlikely to occur the second week of May--even up to May 20! April is more of a freeze month and we have even had freezes up to May 28!(1994) So, in either place, I wouldn't dare go by the last frost dates you gave! I hope this explains my position and why I was wondering about your "sanity". Haha. :-) As for starting plants from seed--every year I tell myself I am going to get the cold loving flowers like Stock begun in time. I hope this year I can break the pattern of not getting to it in time!...See MoreWhere do you keep all of your sink stuff?
Comments (11)Since you are planning your sink, I want to share my review of my new sink setup. I love my tapmaster, although I think it really only makes sense if you also have another hot/cold water faucet either at a different sink or as a hot/cold drinking water faucet at the same, which -- the latter -- we have and love. I cannot imagine reaching down below the sink to get detergent when my hands just touched raw meat. For that reason, I really like our countertop soap dispenser (and the tapmaster). I'm using the built in tilt out to store sponges and brushes. It's very easy to take out for cleaning if needed to. Small volume, but it takes the loose items off the counter. There is plenty of ventilation through the door bumps that the sponges dry out fast. I like it, but you do need to be aware that it limits how forward you can bring your sink; in other words, you need to plan for them. I have a regular sink base and a Blanco sink, and I didn't haven to make any modifications. I know reviews on tapmaster, countertop soap dispenser, and tilt out trays are all mixed. I happen to like all of them....See MoreWhat kind of stuff do you keep around to snack on?
Comments (23)Clementines are like tangerines, or sweet, zipper-skin oranges. I like ground-up almonds, with some ground-up chocolate chips mixed in. Sometimes I add some ground-up cashews, but I can eat them as they are, if I let them soak in my mouth for a while. I used to like chocolate buds and macaroons, plus what we call slowpokes, that are sort of like low-brow Turtles. But the price went up and that was when I felt that all of that sugar wsn't that good for me, and seldom have them, lately. Ground-up peanuts plus chocolate. Dates. Apples. Peanut butter. Cheese (chunk cut off of a block). Celery. ole joyful...See MoreWhat kind of "stuff" do you like in ice cream?
Comments (31)We didn't have formal desserts when I was a kid other than fruit. My father sometimes had a cookie. There was always ice cream in the house however, which usually came out mid-afternoon. My father loved ice cream. :) So do I. I usually don't keep it around. If it isn't, I'll eat a veggie popsicle. :) Because I'll easily eat too much ice cream if given the opportunity. So here's my picky list: I used to be a lumps hater, but when we were kids, my father gave us cones and lumps don't lick well. I still don't like hard lumps. Not those big frozen hard chocolate pieces. Not frozen hard nuts. Not icy rock hard strawberry ice cubes. As an adult, eating out of a custard dish or similar, I do like some kinds of lumps if they're slightly different than the ice cream in texture, but not rock hard, remaining long after the ice cream has melted in one's mouth. Like non-ice-cubey berries or bits of fleshy fruit, like peaches. Chocolate flake-chips rather than lumps. Nuts that have softened a little in the custard. Even some crunchy mix-ins. But I don't have to have any of these. I've always liked a ribbon of syrup or fudge swirled in the ice cream if it's not oversweet. Most of the time caramel is too sweet. A little goes a long way. OTOH, I'm not big on sundaes. Too goopy. I don't like drippy soft ice cream. I want it cold! I like berries or fruit with plain frozen yoghurt, where the sweetness is welcome, but if I'm turning to syrups it means the ice cream must be pretty darned bland. Exception: If you need to put on weight fast, there's fudge ripple ice cream with Kahlua. :) Straight out of the bottle, not syrup. It makes the ice cream melt faster but it's really delicious. And I do like different flavors together. Always have, harkening back to the two scoops treat at the drugstore when I was a kid....See MoreAdella Bedella
